Stinking Saket drain to be covered, space on top marked for parking

The South Municipal Corporation has decided to cover the sewage drain between Saket District Centre and Saket court, much to the relief of residents living in the area.

The decision came almost a year after the chief minister’s office wrote to the commissioner of erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi to cover the wide, stinking sewer line.Ashish Sood of South corporation said parking space would be built atop the covered drain to generate revenue for the cash-strapped civic agency.

“It was a good suggestion from the chief minister’s office in September 2011. Moreover, we need to explore more revenue sources. The plan came from Uday Chawla, a partner with Transearch Consultants, who suggested that the space can be used to park cars,” he said.

Apart from being a health hazard for people, Sood said the drain has been causing serious traffic problems because people often park their cars on the road close to the sewer line.

“Unauthorised parking chokes the road. Moreover, we need to act fast because more cars would be on the road because many offices and shops will open in the area in the coming years,” Sood said.

“There will be space to park almost 1,500 to 2,000 cars once the drain is covered. The project will earn us revenue,” a corporation official said.Earlier, the corporation had decided to cover the Nauroji Nagar drain that runs from Africa Avenue Marg to Ring Road.

High Court has quashed PIL against work in Madikeri

The long pending demand of the residents of Madikeri to have a private bus shelter will be realised soon. The work on the bus shelter will be taken up at the earliest.

With the High  Court quashing the PIL filed by an individual against the construction of the private bus shelter in the identified land, the process for the construction of the bus shelter has begun.

The present private bus shelter situated in the heart of the city is highly congested. With the increase in number of vehicles, there is no enough space for the parking of the buses.
A full-fledged bus shelter will come up on three acre land belonging to Agriculture University, Bangalore, on Race Course road.

The Agriculture University had handed over its land to the district administration in 2009 itself. Later, the district administration handed over the land to the CMC to take up the work. However, a PIL filed in 2010 delayed the construction of bus shelter. Now, the High Court has quashed the PIL.

DPR ready

The CMC had prepared a detailed project report of the bus shelter in 2009. The estimated cost of the project was Rs 7.85 lakh.

The bus shelter will have a hotel, lodge, hall. The work on the shelter will be taken up on BOT basis. The private company will be given contract for 25 years to maintain the bus shelter.

The tender will be invited shortly, said City Muncipal Council Commissioner Shashikumar.

MC to convert Sec 34 area into paid parking lot

The Municipal Corporation is likely to convert an area in Sector 34 into a paid parking zone. A discussion on the issue was held in the meeting of the Finance and Contract Committee after a letter was received from the police pertaining to this. While parts of Sector 34 already has paid parking lots, a demand has been raised by the police for having a paid parking lot in another one.

The issue was on Friday deferred after the councillors stated that instead of the letter from the police, the agenda for the same should be presented before them with the exact area being demarcated. In its letter, the police had asked for the area near the coaching centres in Sector 34 to be converted into a paid parking lot.

The F&CC members also deferred the agenda for finalizing the policy of the Night Food Street. This was done after the decisions that were taken by the councillors during the last meeting were not incorporated and the old agenda was brought before the house. The councillors demanded that the agenda be revised and then presented.

The action taken report, pertaining to the agenda items passed by the F&CC in the last one year that was to be discussed, was also deferred. It was decided that another meeting would be held on August 31 in which a discussion would be held on these issues since with the code of conduct in place by next week owing to the by-elections, no policy decision would be taken. The committee members passed a number of agenda items during the meeting. Approval was given for the purchase of seven hydraulic tipping tractor trailers, water tankers and five tractors. Tertiary treated water would be provided to a green belt along Himalaya Marg. An estimate of the construction of an underground reservoir along with the boosting arrangement at a tubewell in Manimajra was approved. Re-auction of a booth in Sector 25 will be done. Computers and printers will be purchased for different wings of the Municipal Corporation.
