Ball sets rolling for Sec 17 multi-level parking

CHANDIGARH: After a long wait, the ball has finally been set rolling for the construction of the city's first multi-level parking in Sector 17.

Municipal corporation engineering wing on Tuesday opened the financial bids and selected a company for its construction. A local constructor has bagged the Rs 38-crore project, on which work will start in a month. Seven firms had applied for it, of which six qualified for the bidding.

To protect the skyline of the city, floors will not be constructed on the surface of the lot, but beneath it. It will have three basement floors - for four-wheelers -- besides the surface one - for two-wheelers. Covering 3 lakh square feet, with each underground parking of 1 lakh square feet, the lot will be 37 feet below the surface. It will accommodate 950 to 1,000 four-wheelers at a time.

The multi-level parking will be equipped with lifts and state-of-the-art facilities. All floors will have electronic machines and the barricades will open for a vehicle only after a commuter submits the fee. There will be facilities to submit fee through cards.

MC chief engineer S S Bida said, "A company has been selected. Paper work will be completed soon and the construction started in a month." The architectural designs of the building have been approved by the UT architecture wing.

3 years on, Bhopal Municipal Corporation way off from choosing location

BHOPAL: Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) is sill a long way from deciding right location for a multi-level parking in Mahrana Pratap Nagar. The search for proper location, which had begun some three ago, is still not over."We had proposed a four-storied multi-level parking opposite Arch Manor hotel, but a month ago we had to drop the plan," BMC commissioner Rajneesh Shrivastava said. "We dropped the idea due to legal complications and legal matter takes a lot of time to get resolved," he added."The corporation is looking for a proper location to develop multi-level parking in a commercial hub of Bhopal, but, it will take some time as this area is very congested," Shrivastava said.

The construction of another multi-level parking in MP Nagar Zone, I, which had begun five years, is also on hold for the last three years. "Construction of the multi-level parking had to be put on hold due to the corporation's financial crisis," BJP corporator of MP Nagar area Surjeet Singh Chouhan said, adding, "Multi-level parking project will also require some support from Bhopal Development Authority (BDA). The work may take some more time to restart."The official parking spaces in MP Nagar can accommodate only over a 1,000 four-wheelers and over 2,000 two-wheelers. Whereas, this place needs parking facility for nearly 5,000 two-wheelers and over 2,000 four-wheelers," official sources said. There are more than 10,000 commercial establishments, including hotels, banks, shops and coaching classes in MP Nagar Zone I and II.

The authorized paid parking areas, mapped by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) in busy Maharana Pratap Nagar (MP Nagar) area include parking in front of Hakeem's hotel, Bapu ki Kutiya, Axis Bank and Batra Hospital. But there are places in this zone where unauthorised people are collecting parking fees by posing as authorised agents of the BMC.Sharing their daily struggle for parking, commuters in this busy locality complain that they are facing inconvenience and blame the city caretakers for ignoring the problem and for not taking any initiative to streamline the traffic system."Even though roads in MP Nagar are wide enough, there is no place to drive. The multi-crore concrete roads have been converted into parking lots," said Amit Mathur and Krishna Sharma, businessmen."Being a commercial hub of the city, either there should have been proper parking space or the civic bodies should have made proper arrangements so that the vehicles are not parked on the roads," said Vaibhav Verma, a student.

Parking rates may be hiked in Delhi

NEW DELHI: The city might be looking at a hike in parking rates soon and change in parking policies as stakeholders have agreed, in principle, that such solutions need to be found for Delhi's parking problem.

The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) and Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) on Thursday made a presentation to the Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna on parking issues in Delhi, describing problems and proposing solutions for the same.

"A presentation regarding policy initiatives for parking was made to the L-G in the presence of different agencies including the three municipal corporations and NDMC. Now the L-G's office will issue directions after taking a view on the matter. A comprehensive directive will be given by the government," said a source.

After the meeting , Delhi's chief secretary PK Tripathi said that regulating parking was a top priority and certainly hike in parking charges was one way to deter people from unauthorized parking. "We have not yet decided the final course of action but a proposal on parking will be presented before the Delhi cabinet for approval in sometime," Tripathi added.

In its recommendations, the CSE has described how 11% of Delhi is used as parking, and with the number of vehicles expected to only grow in the city, measures need to be undertaken to control both existing and projected parking problems.
