MCD gets nod for 25 new parking sites

Staff Reporter

Delhiites can now look forward to some relief from their never ending parking woes with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi getting the go-head for 25 new parking sites. This along with the earlier approval of 35 surface parking sites is likely to create an additional parking space for 6,000 cars at any given point in time.

According to MCD Standing Committee chairman Yogender Chandolia, these sites were given the no objection certificate by the Delhi Traffic Police this past week following intervention of the Delhi Lieutenant-Governor's Office.

The NOCs are given after the traffic police conducts on-site surveys to make sure vehicular movement is not obstructed in the area.

The civic body currently has only 116-odd surface parking lots. With the latest approval by the traffic police, the number has gone up to 176.

Gurgaon may follow MCDs idea of doubling the night parking fee

GURGAON: Municipal Corporation of Delhi is plans to double night parking fee, which a buyer has to pay while registering his vehicle, may attract car buyers from capital to Gurgaon, as here no such charge is levied on purchase of a car.

While MCD has planned to use this additional income for construction of multi-level parking facilities, despite an exponential increase in the number of cars Gurgaon still lacks a comprehensive plan to provide parking solutions in future. Authorities in Gurgaon are now mulling over introducing a similar fee to develop the much needed parking infrastructure in the city.

Officials in Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon feel the need to have a similar charge. The reason MCD has cited to increase the fee is to make parking lots for the ever increasing vehicles. We have a similar problem here. Moreover, there is so much congestion on the roads and the infrastructure is crumbling. Imposing a fee like night parking charge is a good option. Its a one time charge and should not pinch the residents much, said an MCG official. Local transport department officials say that as of now there is no such plan in place. We dont levy any night parking fee as of now and there is no such proposal at present. Even if there is one it has to be initiated at the state level and the transport department will decide how much it should be, said Satender Duhan, SDM Gurgaon (north), who is the registering authority for vehicles in the city. For using MCD roads and parking spaces, Delhiites have to pay a one-time night parking charge to the municipal corporation while registering the vehicle. People often park vehicles outside their homes or on roads and other public places which belongs to MCD. They have to pay for using MCD land for parking," an MCG official had said.

But residents have protested any extra charge. Look at the roads. They are all broken and full of potholes, we are already paying so much money in terms of taxes and I dont see any reason for such a fee. At least in the new part of the city, residents dont park on the roads at night, there is enough parking space in the condominiums, said Kapil Dubey, a resident of Sushant Estate.

In-principle approval given for additional grant of Rs. 100 cr.

The Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation plans to build ‘magic boxes' at two junctions in Hubli as part of its initiative to improve traffic management in the twin cities.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, HDMC Commissioner K.V. Trilokchandra said the State had given in-principle approval for an additional grant of Rs. 100 crore in the coming financial year 2011-2012. This was in addition to the Rs. 100-crore grant sanctioned earlier.

He said that on the State Government's instruction, the corporation prepared and submitted an action plan for Rs. 100 crore.

Mr. Trilokchandra said that Rs. 5 crore had been set aside for improving traffic management. Of this, Rs. 2 crore would be used for the magic boxes and development of parking lots. The remaining Rs. 3 crore would be used to install surveillance cameras, signages and develop link roads.

Mr. Trilokchandra said that the corporation had earmarked Rs. 35 crore for construction and development of roads, drains, pavements and pedestrian subways. As many as 214 works would be taken up under this.

He said that the corporation would take up expansion of the underground drainage system and lateral works at a cost of Rs. 5 crore to begin with.

“Initially, we plan to take up such works in the Old Hubli area,” he said.

The Commissioner said that keeping in view the problems faced by people living in low-lying areas, Rs. 5.5 crore had been set aside to take up works to strengthen storm-water drains in those areas and also ensure clear passage for overflowing water bodies.

He said Rs. 14.50 crore would be spent to develop Ashraya colonies, graveyards and villages that had been brought under the jurisdiction of the corporation.

He said Rs. 10 crore would be spent on development of parks, tanks and afforestation and another Rs. 10 crore to promote cultural and sports activities.

Mr. Trilokchandra said the corporation had kept aside Rs. 10 crore to asphalt roads that were developed four years ago under the Rs. 30-crore road development plan.
