No solution yet for stalemate over Sector 17 parking lots

Express News Service Tags : Municipal Corporation, project Posted: Fri Nov 19 2010, 01:46 hrs

Chandigarh:  Municipal Corporation is yet to find a way out of the stalemate over the construction of the multi-level parking lot in Sector 17. The construction of the parking lot is yet to start, almost three years after it was approved. The agency that had been allotted the contract for construction had not responded to the repeated letters of the civic body to start construction. A meeting has now been scheduled for next week to discuss the further course of action.

Municipal Corporation was to make the first multilevel parking lot in Sector 17 on Build-Operate-Transfer basis. However, due to the delay in starting of construction, the contractor had demanded that the concession period be increased as the cost of construction has increased from when the project was allotted to now. The demand had been rejected by the Administration. An official said a meeting would be held next week and some solution to the problem would be found. “Efforts are being made that the construction is started at the earliest,” he said. The parking situation in Sector 17 is quite chaotic with a large number of visitors coming to the commercial hub. The construction of the paid parking lot would to an extent provide some relief. Earlier the construction had been delayed due to the clearance for the plans not being received.

No takers for signal maintenance

November 19th, 2010

Hyderabad, Nov. 18: There are no takers for a crucial project like maintenance of traffic signals in Greater Hyderabad which has 24 lakh vehicles.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, which is currently maintaining the traffic signals in the city, wants to wash its hands off the project and has written to the traffic police urging it to take over signal maintenance.

The GHMC has gone to the extent of assuring the traffic police that the civic body will bear all costs involved in installation and maintenance of traffic signals, provided that they take over the job.

The traffic cops, however, are not willing to take on the responsibility. “We are already short staffed. On top of that we do not have trained technicians or engineers qualified in traffic signal management,” a senior officer in the traffic police said.

Over the last two years, the GHMC has received sharp criticism for not being able to maintain traffic signals properly. It has been outsourcing the job to private agencies and the results have been far from satisfactory.

Officials in the GHMC said lack of availability of qualified technicians in signal maintenance was one of the main reasons for the project floundering.

The GHMC additional commissioner (traffic/transport), Mr S. Subba Rao, said the GHMC was spending over `70 lakh per annum on maintenance of traffic signals in the city. “We will give this amount to the traffic police if they take over the project,” he said.

'Model' bus stand open but not ready

While work at the Shanthinagar TTMC is still not over, the BMTC bus stand there too was flooded with rain water on Wednesday.(EPS)

BANGALORE: The Shanthinagar Traffic and Transit Management Centre (TTMC) was inaugurated with much fanfare in September. Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa himself inaugurated it, but with a lot of work at the site pending, it will take the centre another couple of months to be ready for operation.

The Shanthinagar TTMC is part of the Rs 479.95-crore Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) project, under which the state government and the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation planned to build nine such centres in the city.

According to the initial plan, the work at the nine TTMCs should have been completed by July.

Though the Chief Minister and Home and Transport Minister have officially inaugurated the TTMC, the Rs108.5-crore Shanthinagar TTMC is lying vacant for the last two months and work hasn’t been completed yet.

Painting of the five-storey building is still going on, while in the main building the safety nets have been put up and flooring work is underway.

The Shanthinagar facility, which is supposed to serve as a traffic and transit centre managing both inter-state and intra-state bus traffic, presently houses the labourers and their families.
