New delhi: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday flagged off 200 modern low-floor CNG buses, which are part of the Express Bus Service launched on the lines of the chartered bus service.

The Delhi Transport Corporation initiative aims at encouraging more people to use public transport when traveling for work.

The buses that have been inducted into the DTC fleet include both AC and non-AC buses. With this the DTC fleet has gone up to 4,931 buses.

The fare structure of the Express Service is Rs 20 for non-AC buses and Rs 30 for AC buses. The Corporation also plans to issue monthly passes for regular passengers — fare would be Rs 900 for non-AC buses and Rs 1,100 for AC buses. There are plans to provide free newspapers and magazines to the commuters in the buses, officials said.

Around 72 routes have been identified for the chartered bus service, which has been planned to cover most of the major areas in the city. The buses on the Express routes will ply from Monday to Friday, officials said.

Pune: All the bus stops in the PMC’s jurisdiction are on the left side of the road, and a door on the right side of the bus was against the interest of the city, PMC feels.

Putting an end to the controversy over the purchase of buses for the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML), the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) standing committee on Tuesday directed the civic administration to publish an advertisement in the next two days on the purchase of 200 buses with doors only on the left side.

The controversy over the purchase of buses for PMPML cropped up after the PMC standing committee opposed the PMPML move to purchase buses with doors on both sides of the bus.

“The public transport company was asked to change the norms set for the purchase of buses but they have not done it so far. Thus, we directed the civic administration to publish an advertisement within two days for purchase of 200 buses with door on the left side,” said Arvind Shinde, chairman, standing committee.

He said the buses will be semi low-floor buses running on CNG fuel and all will be non air-conditioned.

Earlier, the PMPML had issued tenders for purchasing 100 air-conditioned and 400 non air-conditioned buses with low floor and doors on both sides. It later amended the norms by deciding to purchase only non air-conditioned buses.

However, the transport authority’s plan of purchasing buses with doors on both sides was opposed by the PMC. Shinde said that the PMPML was not following the detailed project report (DPR) that was submitted to the union government for purchase of buses under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

The elected representatives in PMC alleged that the PMPML plan of purchasing buses with doors on both sides were being done only for the interest of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).

All the bus stops in the PMC jurisdiction were on the left side and having door on right side of the bus was against the interest of city.

The political parties in PMC were divided on the issue with NCP supporting the PMPML plan while the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena opposing the move of purchasing buses with doors on both sides.

Thane civic body calls for changes in monorail alignment

PrashantRangnekar Tags : monorail alignment case, mumbai Posted: Tuesday , Apr 27, 2010 at 0010 hrs

Mumbai: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) wants the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority to make a few changes in the proposed route of monorail to avoid congested areas.

According to the TMC officials, the MMRDA had suggested that the alignment start from Teen Haath naka as well as Thane station. If MMRDA faces any problem with Thane station or Kopri, the monorail can be started from Teen Haath naka and later be extended to Thane station till the Kopri Bridge is completed. From Teen Haath naka, the monorail will enter the congested parts of the city like the Hariniwas Circle, Meenatai Thackeray Chowk and Uthalsar. It will further cross the Eastern Express highway towards Bhiwandi and Kalyan.

“The existing alignment would be passing through congested parts of the city where we have planned projects to improve infrastructure. If the proposed monorail alignment is implemented, then the existing traffic woes would not be solved and the problem would further aggravate. The present alignment is such that it won’t help the Thaneities, but commuters from Bhiwandi and Kalyan,” said Thane mayor Ashok Vaity. “Instead, the alignment should enter the city through Wagle estate, which is less congested and has wider roads comparatively.”

Pandurang Patil, Shiv Sena corporator from Kopri, also the leader of the house in the TMC, said, “Even if the MMRDA starts the monorail from Teen Haath naka, then commuters have to go to the station and the project would be futile. This would also mean further congestion of Teen Haath naka. Instead, the MMRDA should build the monorail terminal on a railway plot at Kopri. The terminal at Kopri should be connected to the Thane station with a skywalk.” However, sources in the railways said that land would be used for fifth and sixth line and creating stabling lines as per MUTP work.

“The monorail should have connectivity with the station. We are open to suggestions and MMRDA won’t do any project without the approval of the local body (TMC),” said Joint Metropolitan Commissioner Ashwini Bhide. The issue will come for discussion in a special general body meeting expected to be held in the first week of May.
