CMC acquires 3 acre land for private bus stand
Madikeri, Feb 2, DHNS:

Madikeri CMC acquired three acre land belonging to Agriculture University, for the shifting of private bus stand on Tuesday.

With this, the long pending dream of shifting private bus stand has been realised. The land was acquired in the presence of City Municipal Council President P D Ponnappa, Commissioner K Srikanthrao, Ponnameper Forest College Dean N A Prakash, Field officer Rajashekar.

Of Rs 5 crore released under Chief Minister’s Small and Medium Town Development project, a sum of Rs 1.5 crore has been earmarked for the construction of bus stand. Three acre land will be acquired after conducting the survey. The work on the construction of bus stand will commence within two to three months, said CMC President P D Ponnappa.

He said “the acquired land will be levelled first. Later, we will make arrangement for the parking of the buses. The CMC is also planning to construct shopping mall to fetch additional income.”

“Government has agreed to spend Rs 3 crore for the construction of new private bus stand. CMC will also construct shopping malls in the old bus stand premises,” he informed.

Modern bus stand

Commissioner K Srikanthrao said: “the modern bus stand will be constructed keeping in mind the increase in population for the next 20 years and inflow of tourists to the district. An action plan will be prepared soon.”

“CMC has been trying to shift the private bus stand from the present congested place for the last one decade. However, Agriculture University had not agreed to hand over the land. It was on July 28, 2009, a meeting held under the presidentship of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, the Agriculture University Vice Chancellor had finally agreed to hand over the land to CMC.”

As per the agreement, government had agreed to hand over eight acre land belonging to Horticulture department near Ponnampet Forest College in return of three acre land to City Municipal Council. CMC Vice-President Latha Bangera and others were present.

Plea for 8 acre land

Ponnampet Forest College Dean N A Praksh urged the government to hand over eight acre land to the Agriculture University, for handing over its three acre land to the construction of private bus stand.

“As per the agreement signed in the presence of Chief Minister, the university has handed over its land to CMC. If there is any delay in handing over eight acre land, then we will have to appeal the government once again,” he added.

A new Development: Madikeri CMC president P.D. Ponnappa performing bhoomi puja on Tuesday after receiving three acres of land from the UAS for the construction of the private bus-stand in Madikeri.

Madikeri: The University of Agriculture Sciences (UAS) representative N.A. Prakash handed over three acres of land that belongs to the UAS on Tuesday to the Madikeri City Municipal Council (CMC) authorities for the construction of a private bus-stand.

Mr. Prakash, the Dean of the College of Forestry at Ponnampet in Kodagu, was deputed by the UAS, Bangalore, to facilitate the handing over the three acres of land for the construction of the private bus-stand. The president of the CMC P.D. Ponnappa, Commissioner Srikanth Rao, Chairman of the Works Committee of the CMC Prakash and Councillors K.T. Baby Mathew, Rani Machaiah and Unnikrishnan were present on the occasion. A survey was conducted later to mark the land for fencing.

Efforts made by the elected representatives in the last one and half decade to secure appropriate land for shifting the congested private bus-stand in the city had failed. The UAS had firmly refused to hand over land for the purpose of private bus stand project. The UAS authorities had earlier rejected the request for release of land on the grounds that research was being done on paddy varieties grown on the identified land. The research works on “blast” disease in paddy had won international recognition, it had said. If lands were handed over, the UAS would have to curtail its research activities, it had maintained.

However, in a meeting held on July 28, 2009, which was chaired by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa in Bangalore, it was decided that in lieu of the three acres of land, the Government would release to the UAS eight acres of land next to the Agriculture Research Station in Ponnampet. That land belongs to the Department of Horticulture.

Subsequently, at the UAS Board meeting held on August 18, 2009, the members endorsed the order of the Chief Minister to hand over three acres of land under survey number 405/2 to the CMC in lieu of the transfer of the eight acres of land adjacent to the Agriculture Research Station in Ponnampet.

Mr. Prakash told presspersons here that three acres had been handed over to the CMC as per the Government instructions and hoped the Government would release the eight acres in Ponnampet at the earliest.

Mr. Srikanth Rao said that preliminary works would start in two-months time. A shopping mall would come up at the current private bus-stand area.

Mr. Ponnappa said a sum of Rs. one crore had been earmarked for the project in the first phase of the Rs. 15-crore grant given to the CMC under the Chief Minister’s Small and Medium Towns Development Project (CMSMTDP) this year. In the second phase, Rs. two crore would be earmarked for the private bus-stand.

After the general body of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) gave its nod to the proposed metro rail project last week, the Arogya Sena has protested the way the proposal was passed by the corporators and administration without any dialogue with the citizens. In a press release, the Arogya Sena has condemned the civic body for not involving citizens in the discussion on Metro. “The ruling parties did not care to take people’s opinion on the project and pushed the proposal with sheer majority in the house. These parties did not even let people know what the Metro project is, which is worth over Rs 10,000 crore. Even the mayor, who had earlier opposed the Metro plan, did not speak anything. ,” the Arogya Sena said. The Arogya Sena has threatened to launch an agitation if no proper discussion was held on the issue.
