New Delhi, Nov. 10 Orders for purchase of 11,185 buses have been placed by various States under the one-time scheme by the Urban Development Ministry to boost urban transport under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Overall, the Government has sanctioned purchase of 15,260 buses for the various mission cities under JNNURM.

The break-up

According to an official statement, Maharashtra has placed purchase orders for 2,230 buses, the highest number among the States, followed by Delhi and Tamil Nadu with orders for purchase of 1,600 buses each.

“The lot would consist of AC low-floor, non-AC low-floor, semi low-floor buses and mini buses,” it said.

Andhra Pradesh has placed order for 1,540 buses for Hyderabad, Tirupati, Vijayawada and Vishakhapatnam. Bulk of these orders (1,000 buses) is meant for Hyderabad.

Uttar Pradesh has ordered for 1,350 buses and Uttarakhand for 145 buses. West Bengal has finalised purchase orders for 1,300 buses and Kerala for 320 buses under the scheme.

Other States that have so far placed orders are Madhya Pradesh (175 buses), Chhattisgarh (100), Jharkhand (240), Rajasthan (400) and Manipur (25).

Under the second stimulus package announced by the Government in January, it was decided that States would be provided assistance in the form of grant under the JNNURM for the purchase of buses. The financing is meant exclusively for city bus service and Bus Rapid Transit System for all mission cities.

The scheme is expected to give a boost to the automobile industry. The funding is shared by the Centre, States and the Municipal Bodies. The size of the Central allocation depends on the population density of the recipient mission cities.

3-day Solarcon meet begins

Chief Minister K Rosaiah flagging off a solar-powered autorickshaw at the inauguration of Solarcon India 2009 conference in Hyderabad on Monday.
HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh is likely attract investments to the tune of $16 billion once the proposed Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, with a target to generate 20 giga watts of solar power by 2020, falls into place.

Interestingly, to promote solar power generation in the State, the State Government said it was planning to introduce a similar policy on the lines of the national policy. The proposed Solar Mission is likely to be announced on November 14 and is expected to give a fillip to the emerging solar energy production in the State and across the country.

Making the inaugural address at the three-day Solarcon India 2009, organised by SEMI and ISA here on Monday, Chief Minister K Rosaiah said, ``The State would attract investments worth Rs 3,000 crore in the first phase of Solar City, a firstof- its-kind cluster for solar farms coming up in 10,000 acre at Kadiri in

Anatapur district.’’ Four companies _ Sunborne, AES Solar, Lanco Solar and Titan Energy _ have signed a memorandum of understanding with the State Government on Monday to set up facilities in Phase-I at Solar City.

It has also signed an MoU with Germany-based Fraunhofer Institute of Germany, a global research and development institute in solar energy sector, to collaborate on new technologies, testing and certification, training programmes on solar energy.

Meanwhile, speaking on the sidelines of the session, B V Naidu, chairman of ISA said, ``The Union Government will provide incentives to 12 players, including two foreign players, to set up operations, while half of them will be based in AP.’’

The Union Government is anticipating total investments of $32 billion from these companies over the next four to five years.

Andhra Pradesh is in the forefront of solar energy production and has created a dedicated cluster for semiconductor and solar photvoltaic (PV) manufacturing. However, the costs of solar energy production are steep and efforts should be made to reduce costs and increase efficiency of PV modules and cells, he added.

Enjoy a Duck Bus ride in 2010

You can enjoy the sights in south Mumbai while travelling in a Duck Bus, an amphibious bus, next year.

“The undertaking has planned to start Duck Bus in a year, with halts at Girgaum, Worli, Mahim and Bandra near the sealink,” said Uttam Khobragade, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking general manager on Wednesday.

He made the announcement while speaking at the BEST budget 2010-11.

In August, the BEST Committee cleared the proposal to start Duck Bus services in the city to promote tourism.

The idea of running the amphibious buses was suggested by Dilip Patel, chairman of the BEST committee, after his visit to Toronto, where they are a tourist attraction.

BEST then tied up with a city-based private firm to introduce the vehicle that can ply both on road and sea.

The undertaking plans to run one bus service on an experimental basis in south Mumbai (for 40 minutes) and cruise from Gateway of India till Colaba (20 minutes) and back at a cost of around Rs 100-Rs 150 per person per trip.

The speed of the bus would be nearly 50 kmph on road and 10 kmph in water.

The private firm will import these buses from the US at an approximate cost of Rs 1 crore — equivalent to cost of two BEST AC buses — and also maintain the vehicles and bear the expenses of building jetties.

Duck Buses are popular tourist attractions in international cities such as Boston, Singapore, New York and London.
