More JNNURM buses

BANGALORE: Bangaloreans will get more number of hi-tech buses to commute. As many as 200 buses, which have been purchased under the JNNURM scheme of the Centre, will be flagged off in Bangalore on September 5 by Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy.

BMTC Managing Director Syed Zameer Pasha told presspersons on Monday that Bangalore will get a total of 1,000 buses with the JNNURM assistance of Rs,. 323 crore. About 200 buses from these were being inaugurated now and the remaining would join the fleet soon.

Each bus would cost about Rs. 21 lakh, of which 35 per cent of the cost was borne by the Government of India while the State Government was chipping in 15 per cent of the cost. Remaining 50 per cent of the cost was taken care of by the BMTC, he noted.

City bus-stand to be opened soon

Finishing touches: Work on modernising the city bus-stand has been taken up under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

Mysore: The city bus stand that is being modernised under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) will be thrown open for the public on September 15. Even as the deadline is fast approaching, finishing touches are being given to the bus-stand.

“We are at it and making all possible efforts to complete the remaining work at the earliest to facilitate its opening by September 15,” said Divisional Controller M.N. Srinivas.

He told The Hindu that curing work is under progress and finishing touches are being given. Besides a subway connecting the road adjacent to the bus-stand to the terminus is also almost ready.

The modernisation of city bus-stand is part of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation’s master plan to improve the city’s transport infrastructure. Besides the city bus-stand, under the JNNURM, mofussil bus stand is also being reconstructed and Inter-Model Transport Facility (IMTC) is also coming up at five locations in the city.

In the city bus-stop, five new platforms have been constructed. Drinking water kiosks, toilets, reservation counters, and other facilities will be provided.

PCMC to spend Rs 6.4 crore on free bus pass scheme

Pune: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will spend Rs 6.4 crore on a free bus pass scheme for students living within municipal limits.

Speaking to reporters here on Friday, Dnyaneshwar Bhalerao, chairman, standing committee and director, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML), said the PCMC has a provision of Rs 10 crore for school education, which can be increased to Rs 15 crore to Rs 20 crore.

The PCMC had taken a decision to provide free bus passes to the students of Std V to XII residing within the municipal limits and invited applications from interested students. As many as 20,754 applications were received at the four zonal offices of the PCMC.

The PCMC received 12,961 applications from students of Std V to X and will incur an expenditure of Rs 250 per student per month. The total monthly expenditure will be Rs 32.40 lakh while the annual expenditure will be Rs 3.07 crore.

As many as 7,793 applications from students of Std XI and XII were received. The civic body will spend Rs 450 per student per month, which means a total monthly expenditure of Rs 35.06 lakh and annual expenditure of Rs 3.33 crore.

The civic body has started distributing the free bus passes from Monday at its four zonal offices.

Meanwhile, Bhalerao said the PMPML will start bus service from Akurdi railway station to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) headquarters from Sunday.

The buses on the new route will start from Akurdi railway station and pass through Sambhaji chowk, Mhalsakant school, Sukhwani chowk, Akurdigaon, Indira chowk, Shitaladevi, Khandoba temple, Bhoirnagar, Chinchwadgaon and Dange chowk to reach the PMC building.
