Pay-and-park facility below Bhosari flyover

PUNE: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) plans to start a pay-and-park system below the Rajmata Jijau flyover in Bhosari to reduce traffic congestion on the Pune-Nashik highway.

Mayor Mohini Lande, accompanied by civic officials, inspected the flyover and nearby areas on Friday. As a first step, Lande directed the officials to remove the vehicles parked below the flyover.

Goods transport, commercial vehicles and handcarts are routinely parked below the flyover which causes inconvenience to pedestrians and leads to traffic congestion.

Lande told the officials to start landscaping in the space below the flyover where these vehicles are parked.

A decision has also been taken to install a traffic signal on the road below the flyover that goes to Alandi.

P1 and P2 parking will be introduced on the Alandi Road. Besides, bus stops on Alandi Road and Gavhane Vasti will be shifted to survey no 1 near Ankush Landge auditorium.

Lande instructed the civic officials to deploy anti-encroachment squads in two shifts to remove encroachments on roads, footpaths and below the flyover.

A median will be constructed on Dighi Road besides barricading the Dighi Road and Chandani chowk for streamlining the traffic.

New Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited fares from tomorrow

PUNE: Bus commuters in the city will now have to pay fares in multiples of five (Rs 5, Rs 10, Rs 15 and so on), according to the distance they travel. The new fare structure has been approved by the regional transport authority and the same will come into effect from Wednesday.

Earlier this month, the board of directors of the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) - the city public bus transport undertaking, had approved a proposal for revision of the fare structureThe new fare structure has been introduced to reduce the problems being faced by commuters and conductors while exchanging small-changelike Rs 1 and Rs 2.

The PMPML officials said the revised fare structure will also help ensure that more number of tickets are issued.

The PMPML had last revised the fares in March, this year. Officials said the earlier fares were based on stages of distance travelled. However, now the fare structure has been revised to do away with the problems faced by commuters and conductors.

However, PMPML officials maintained that there was no revision in the daily and monthly fares. for students, citizens and senior citizens.

For students commuting from distant places to Pune and the Pimpri Chinchwad, the monthly travel pass will now cost Rs 750.

For special buses and those running during the late hours, an additional fare of Rs 5 will be charged.

Bus commuters' groups have, however, suggested that fares for short distances should be reduced. "The fares should be decided on the basis of the distance travelled in km and not on the basis of stages. Many bus stops in the city are not situated as per the stage distance of 2 km," said Jugal Rathi of the PMP Pravasi Manch.

Rathi said the information about the exact travel distance based on the location of the bus stops should be available in the e-ticket machines so that the tickets are issued according to the distance travelled by a passenger.

"Passengers travelling less than 10 km have to pay high fares because of this problem. The passengers will not be required to pay higher fares if the transport body implements a fare structure based on the distance travelled," Rathi said.

Kanpur municipal corporation to adopt peddle policy for easy flow of traffic, revenue

KANPUR: Kanpur municipal corporation, in a bid to generate revenue, is now going to adopt peddle policy and has even started spade work in this regard from Tuesday last.

Apparently, it is being publicized that with the implementation of Peddle policy the city would get rid of traffic jams at various crossings and vehicular movement could be made smooth. Besides, the municipal corporation would also be able to generate revenue of Rs 20 to 25 from each vendor of Peddle policy.

Incharge of zone-4 has taken initiative in this regard and zonal head Rajeev Shukla visited two locations at Medical College crossing and Arya Nagar Sabji Mandi for the purpose. Rajeev Shukla said he had identified the places where cart vendors and shanty shop vendors could be shifted.

His squad first visited Medical College crossing and found that fruit venders had encroached a lot of space near bus stand. Though, initially he removed the fruit vendors from the crossing. Later, he spotted a spot near JK Cancer Hospital in Rawatpur suitable for putting up fruit market. Shukla said that approximately 35 fruit carts could be accommodated there.

Thereafter, he went to Arya Nagar Sabji Mandi where he found several vegitable vendors occupying a major part of the road resulting in snail pace traffic in the area. He said a that a piece of land near Alen Ganj could accommodate approximately 30 carts.

Talking to TOI he said the state had enforced Peddle policy three years ago but the work couldn't progress in this regard in the city due to some reasons. Now, the corporation has reconsidered the policy and it is being implemented in the city. All the zones have been activated in this regard. Approximately, 65 spots would be identified for vending zone.

Former municipal commissioner NK Singh Chauhan had also conducted a survey at Arya Nagar, Phool Bagh and other places of the city for vending zones. The basic idea at that time was to collect all the scattered vendors of the locality in a systemised way and develop a mini-market at one place so that roads and crossings could be made encroachment free resulting in a smooth traffic flow.

Meanwhile, the municipal corporation had prepared a draft to spend a sum of Rs 56.82 crore for the development work in the city and construction of roads. Recently, Sriprakash Singh, special secretary of Nagar Vikas, in a letter, asked the officials to execute their planning through UP Vyapar Vikas fund. Under this head corporation would connect markets with industrial zones by construction of roads culverts and bridges.

Around 60 works have been identified and their proposal would be sent to the district magistrate for approval. District magistrate, Sameer Verma, in a letter, asked the corporation officials to send him projects along with the estimate and details about the fund under which the work is to be done so that he might take further actions in this regard.
