Water supply on alternate days, starting tomorrow

Pune: After days of uncertainty, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Tuesday announced alternate day water cut from Thursday to ensure that the existing water stock in the dams last for more days as delayed monsoon has dipped the water level.

“The irrigation department on the basis of monsoon of last few years keeps the usable stock till July 15, hoping the monsoon will again refill the dams. The scheduled date has passed and the delayed monsoon has led to drastic drop in water capacity in dams and available stock can only ensure water for next 20 days. Hence, the water cut can help tackle the situation as the water available can be used for 40 days,” said Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Zagade.

The decision was taken at a joint meeting of the irrigation department and civic administration on Tuesday. The PMC has announced the time-table for the purpose by dividing the city in two parts and it would last till the water levels increase in Khadakwasla, Panshet and Varasgaon dams.

The central part of the city will not have water supply from July 23. The area includes all peth areas, Rajendranagar, Lokmanyanagar, Parvati, Dattawadi, Shivajinagar gaothan, localities off Pune-Solapur Road and Cantonment area.

The localities off Sinhagad Road, Deccan and off Fergusson College Road, Pashan, Baner, Balewadi and Sus will not have water supply on alternate days starting from July 23.

The areas that will not have water supply on alternate days from July 24 include localities like Pune-Satara Road, Bibewadi, Katraj, Law College Road, Khadki, Ganeshkhind Road, Chaturshingi, Karvenagar and Kothrud.
