Rs 4.5-cr water audit to tackle contamination
The civic body is undertaking a pilot project for a water audit in seven wards. The audit, that will cost Rs 4.5 crore, is aimed at reducing water leakages and contamination of drinking water. Two private agencies were appointed in the last week of August for the purpose after HT reported how the BMC’s own Environmental Status report (ESR) 2009-2010 revealed high levels of impurities in your drinking water.
The civic body’s report had revealed that contamination levels had increased by 100 per cent in the last one year.
While it was 13.80 per cent in 2008-2009, it had risen to 26.10 per cent in 2009-2010 across all 24 wards in the city. This means, of the 3,400 million litres (MLD) of water supplied to the city daily, 884 MLD is unfit for consumption.
