Water solution before Diwali: Mayor

Citizens in some areas of Mumbai will have to make do with less water for some more time as there is no sign of a solution on faulty water distribution system before the festival. It is more than a month the island city has not been getting sufficient water due to some operational snags in the system. However, the civic administration had approached two of the retired Hydraulic engineers to study the distribution system and find a solution.

In the standing committee, corporators cutting across party line said the BMC’s hydraulic department is not being able to redress the water problems although the lakes that supply water to city brimming. Aseem Gupta, additional municipal commissioner, said: “The civic body will sort out the distribution system in 10 to 15 days.” He said until the civic body fixes the flow meters, it is not possible to check how much water is distributed in which area.

Mayor Shraddha Jadhav asked Gupta to come up with solution before Diwali.

A standing committee meeting on Tuesday was adjourned in protest against water shortage in the city. Corporators across the party line supported the adjourned motion moved by Shiv Sena.

Sunil Prabhu, Sena leader in the Standing Committee, moved adjourned motion which was supported by Congress, NCP and other political parties.  Before the meeting, party leaders had a discussion with municipal commissioner Swadheen Kshatriya.

He assured them that they would come with the solution before Diwali. Kshatriya however was not available for comment. Shubhangi Shirke, a Sena corporator from Ghatkopar Bhatt Wadi, threatened in the general body meeting that she would set herself ablaze if the problem of water distribution in her ward is not addressed immediately.
