Potable water supply plan gets ADB push

Himanshu Kumar Lall | Dehradun

To supply clean drinking water in Dehradun, a project with the support of Asian Development Bank has been started. More than 170 kilometres of new pipeline would be laid down by the department. All three nodal agencies associated directly or indirectly with the supply of potable water to the people will contribute to bring the project to the ground level.

People living in the remote areas suffer most. The pipelines to supply potable water were laid around 40-50 year ago. People also wanted the old pipelines to be replaced by the new ones, due to hygiene concerns. Despite the Government’s claim to provide round-the-clock potable water in every corner of the district, people are waiting for the supply.

Government official Raghunath said that the project is entirely funded by ADB (Asian Development Bank) for replacing old pipelines with new ones. He told that Gandhigram, Luxman Chowk, Khurbura, Sanjay Colony and Parade Ground and other adjoining areas are among the main localities of Dehradun where new pipelines will be laid down by the department. Raghunath informed that Peyjal Nigam, Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD), Public Works Department (PWD) etc. government departments have been contributing to bring the project to the ground level.

“Dehradun is divided into seven zones under Uttarakhand Urban Sector Development Investment Programme (UUSDIP),” he said, adding that the project is likely to complete by 2012. Raghunath informed that the project is being undertaken by Vishwas Infrastructure and instructions have already been released to every official to bring the project to the ground level in the given time frame.
