BBMP blames water utility for subway delay

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Blaming the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) for not shifting its pipeline, H. Ravindra, Chairperson of the Standing Committee for Major Works in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), announced that the K.R. Market pedestrian subway will be ready by the first week of March.

The subway had been under construction for the past four years.

Speaking to presspersons after inspecting the subway along with other members of the standing committee and local councillor P. Dhanraj, he said the BBMP had already paid BWSSB Rs. 1 crore for to shift the pipeline. He directed the BWSSB officials to shift the pipeline within 15 days.

The Sirsi Circle flyover would be repaired at a cost of Rs. 3.15 crore and the tender would be floated soon to enable work to begin in a month's time. At Bamboo Bazaar in Kalasipalya, the committee members found various encroachments and violations.

Flooded basement

At the multi-storeyed parking lot on J.C. Road, the committee members found that the entire basement was flooded. Mr. Ravindra said that repairs at Rs. 22 lakh would be taken up at the parking lot.

During the course of the inspection, the team stumbled upon an illegally constructed shed under the Sirsi Circle flyover which was filled with garbage, used and unused condoms and liquor bottles. The shed was near a toilet and councillors suspected the maintenance personnel were aware of the goings on in it. The latter were taken to task.
