Check water wastage, MCC told

Staff Correspondent

As drinking water scarcity may worsen here in the days ahead with water-levels in the reservoirs plummeting, Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) has given suggestions to the Mysore City Corporation to tide over the crisis.

It suggested that the MCC arrange for regular ward-wise surprise visits during early mornings to check wastage/misuse of water. The team should report leaks in mainlines, overflowing of overhead tanks, taps which are not closed, etc. Action can be initiated under Section 208 of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act against wastage/misuse of water, according to the MGP.

“The MCC must address, on a war-footing, the problem of defective water meters,” Sreemathi Hariprasad of the MGP said in the list of suggestions sent to the civic body.

She said many residential and commercial properties had borewells and people were allegedly misusing borewell water. “This water belongs to everyone just as that in rivers and tanks, and a few moneyed individuals should not be allowed to exploit groundwater,” she said.

She alleged that these borewells had been dug without obtaining the mandatory permission from the city corporation.
