Pimpri Chinchwad: Another area to get water round-the-clock

PUNE: After Yamunanagar area of Nigdi, the municipal corporation of Pimpri Chinchwad will supply round-the-clock water to Premlok Park area. The trial run will start within a month and the it will be implemented on a full scale only two months later. The municipal corporation has already been able to successfully provide round the clock water supply in Yamunanagar area of Nigdi.

Pravin Ladkat, executive engineer of the water supply department, said of the five to six locations that were identified, the corporation picked Premlok Park and nearby areas of Bhoirnagar, Dalvinagar, Udyognagar and Queenstown. The project will benefit a population of over 18,000. The area has around 1,044 water connections in all. An elevated storage reservoir (ESR) with a capacity of 25 lakh litres will be the main water source in the area.

Before starting the trial run, the civic body will conduct a public awareness drive in residential colonies and housing societies on the role of citizens for the successful implementation of the project.

Earlier, the civic body had conducted a survey on the residential and commercial properties, the number of residents, the storage facilities in the houses, type of water connections and details about water usage.

Ladkat said PCMC plans to start the trial run in Premlok Park at the earliest. If the project is delayed till early next year, it would be the onset of summer when the demand for water is more, he added.

The municipal corporation will also identify leakages in the water supply network before the trial run. However, repair of leakages will continue even during the trial run.

Pradhikaran is the third area, where the corporation will start 24/7 water supply. In Pradhikaran, there are about 9,500 water connections serving a population of 92,920 people.Box 1:

In a nutshell

Areas covered: Premlok Park, Bhoirnagar, Dalvinagar, Udyognagar and Queenstown.

Water connections: 1,044

Population: 18,050

Trial run to start in one month

Next area identified for 24/7 water supply: Pradhikaran, which has a population of 92,920 and 9,500 water connections

One year on, supply at Yamunanagar remains uninterrupted

The Yamunanagar area of Nigdi has been getting 24/7 water supply after the municipal corporation implemented the pilot project in March last year.

The area has a total of 2,376 water connections. Earlier, the area received water for six hours (three hours each in the morning and evening). As part of the project, 132 leakages were detected and plugged. Water supply to the area was increased by two hours. Officials of the water supply department said 'pressure bloggers' have been installed at various points in the area to check the pressure of water supplied to the residents. The employees carry out random checks of the readings of these bloggers. If the pressure is lower than normal, then the employees know that there is some leakage or other problem in the network and remedial measures are taken.

Enumerating the benefits of the project, executive engineer of the water supply department Pravin Ladkat said, "The residents are receiving water supply throughout the day, so they do not store water. Earlier, there was a tendency to throw away stored water and use fresh water. Water consumption in the area has been reduced by around 10%. The houses on the upper floors of the building are also getting water with good pressure, which was not possible earlier.
