To address the recurrent water shortage in Chittoor, the State government has envisaged an ambitious project to supply safe drinking water to urban and rural habitations in the district from Kandaleru reservoir.

Explaining the details to media persons on Sunday, District in-charge Minister K. Parthasarathy said that the project would establish a 170-km pipeline from the reservoir, drawing water through various lift arrangements.

“Irrigation and CAD Department issued orders for water allocation and permission to draw 6.61 tmc. (urban-2.372 tmc.ft, Rural-2.720 tmc.ft, industrial-1,440 tmc.ft) as water availability in the storage dam is dependable,” he said.

Mr. Parthasarathy further said that the water would first be transferred to a treatment plant in Renigunta and subsequently to Tirupati, Tirumala, Chittoor, Madanapalle, Punganur, Palamaner ULBs alongside 45 rural mandals in Phase-I.

The remaining 21 mandals will be covered in Phase-II, including industrial demand.

He also said that the Rs. 5,800 crore-project would require 60 MW power for operation and nearly Rs.200 crore per year for maintenance.

Infrastructure Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (INCAP) has been appointed the implementing agency and the project is scheduled to be finished by 2015. Meanwhile, the State has released Government Orders 14 and 1171, which pertain to setting up of a Government Medical College for Women with 150 seats, under the aegis of Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS).
