PMC set to launch water dept projects approved by Centre

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) administration is all set to launch the water supply department's projects that were recently approved by the Union government under JNNURM, and has acquired 90 per cent of the land required for them.

"The work of three projects of laying pipeline to draw water from Bhama Askhed Dam, and water treatment plants at Parvati and Vadgaon Budhruk will start soon, as the administrative process is complete," said Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhishek Krishna.

He added that there was no issue related to acquisition of land for the water treatment plant at Swargate as the land was already in possession of the PMC, while the private land owner at Vadgaon Budhruk had given consent to the PMC to start water treatment project work instead of waiting for the completion of acquisition of land. "The project to draw water from Bhama Askhed Dam requires huge acres of land. Around 90 per cent of the required land has been acquired for the project and the remaining acquisition will be done in the next few days," Krishna said, adding that the work would start in a few months.

To increase the water supply capacity of the PMC, the Union government in July approved of the implementation of a Rs 380-crore project to draw water from Bhama Askhed Dam and a Rs 118-crore project to expand the work at Vadgaon Budhruk and Swargate.

The project has been planned to meet the water supply needs of the eastern part of the city, including Nagar Road, Yerawada, Kharadi, Lohegaon and Vadgaonsheri areas.

The PMC will construct a water purification plant of 250 MLD at Vadgaon Budhruk, which will cater to the water demands of fringe areas on Sinhagad Road, Satara Road and Solapur Road. The water supply capacity of Parvati Water Works will be increased by 500 MLD at an estimated cost of Rs 198 crore.

The additional municipal commissioner said most of the projects in phase one of JNNURM had been completed and the remaining would be completed next year. The BRTS on Nagar and Alandi road will also start soon.
