Rainwater harvesting law passed

BANGALORE: The Legislative Council on Monday gave its approval to The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage (Amendment) Bill 2009 making rain water harvesting measures mandatory in buildings in Bangalore City.

The bill found wholehearted support with the Opposition benches asking the government to make the law more stringent. Responding to members queries BWSSB Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu noted that the collection of rainwater and its use of are both covered separately in the bill. Incentive-based community harvesting of rain water will be promoted among clusters of small dwelling units, he said.

BWSSB plans projects worth Rs 6,000 cr




BANGALORE: Minister for BWSSB and IT, Katta Subramanya Naidu, on Saturday said that BWSSB would be undertaking drinking water, sewerage and sewage treatment-related projects worth Rs 6000 crore in the next two years. BWSSB will be spending Rs 3000 crore on drinking water projects, Rs 2000 crore on sewage treatment and Rs 1000 crore on laying sewerage lines.

Naidu was speaking after inaugurating drinking water and sewage projects at Kakatiya Nagar in Padmanabhanagar constituency. He further said that the government was eager to start a project to provide five TMC of water to Bangalore at a cost of Rs 3000 crore, in the next two to three years.

The government is planning to take control of 148 tanks and lakes, including Thippagondanahalli tank, that have been leased to private companies

, to enhance ground-water in the city. Authorities have been given instructions in this regard.

BBMP and BDA had already acquired 30 lakes and would be acquiring 70 more lakes within one year. BBMP, BDA and BMRDA have been instructed to clean the lakes.

Tenders for a sewerage water purification plant at a cost of Rs 2000 crore will be called for in the near future. The purified water can be used in industries, for cleaning and other household purposes.

The old and worn-out sewerage lines in the city would be replaced at a cost of Rs 1000 crore. Naidu said: “A 20-km-long drinking water line would be laid to Kakatiya Nagar in two months at a cost of Rs 2.8 crore.”

Model ward

The Minister announced that the government was planning to develop Yediyur ward as a model ward and had already set aside Rs 10 crore for supplying drinking water to all households in the ward.
