Staff Reporter

To address the recurrent water shortage in Chittoor, the State government has envisaged an ambitious project to supply safe drinking water to urban and rural habitations in the district from Kandaleru reservoir.

Explaining the details to media persons on Sunday, District in-charge Minister K. Parthasarathy said that the project would establish a 170-km pipeline from the reservoir, drawing water through various lift arrangements.

“Irrigation and CAD Department issued orders for water allocation and permission to draw 6.61 tmc. (urban-2.372 tmc.ft, Rural-2.720 tmc.ft, industrial-1,440 tmc.ft) as water availability in the storage dam is dependable,” he said.

Mr. Parthasarathy further said that the water would first be transferred to a treatment plant in Renigunta and subsequently to Tirupati, Tirumala, Chittoor, Madanapalle, Punganur, Palamaner ULBs alongside 45 rural mandals in Phase-I.

The remaining 21 mandals will be covered in Phase-II, including industrial demand.

He also said that the Rs. 5,800 crore-project would require 60 MW power for operation and nearly Rs.200 crore per year for maintenance.

Infrastructure Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (INCAP) has been appointed the implementing agency and the project is scheduled to be finished by 2015. Meanwhile, the State has released Government Orders 14 and 1171, which pertain to setting up of a Government Medical College for Women with 150 seats, under the aegis of Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS).

Rajkot to get daily water supply now

RAJKOT: Citizens had given up all hope that they would ever get daily water supply from Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC). Despite sufficient rainfall since many years, they have had to be content with water supply every alternate day.

However, the ongoing spell of rains has spelt a bonanza for all. The civic body has decided to supply water for 20 minutes daily following fresh inflow of water into the dams. RMC on Thursday decided to lift the water cut that was imposed in the city for the last 10 months due to water scarcity.

According to mayor Raksha Boliya, the decision was taken on Thursday after evaluating the water situation in dams, which include Bhadar, Aji (1) and Nyari dam. Bhadar and Nyari dams are overflowing and Aji (1) dam is about to overflow. Lalpari and Randarda lakes are also overflowing on Thursday.

"We have decided to supply 20 minutes water daily in city in the wake of new inflow of water into dams. The 20 minutes water supply will be started from October 1,'' Boliya said.

In May, the city was heavily dependent on private tankers and residents had to shell out extra money every fortnight to get water. This has been situation for several years as the city does not have a proper distribution mechanism.

The water scarcity has nearly triggered water wars in the region with people often coming out on the roads.

Municipal Commissioner G.S. Panda Das has allayed the fears that emergency services will hit due to the mass casual leave of engineering staff.

The Commissioner on Wednesday said emergency services, including, supply of drinking water, Under Ground Drainage (UGD) and street lighting, would not be affected. The Corporation made alternative arrangements for water supply etc.

The people could contact (0866) 2573223 incase they faced any problem, he said.

It may be recalled that the engineering staff of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) had applied for mass casual leave from September 26 to 28 to express their solidarity to ongoing agitation against the decision to bifurcate the State.

The indoor and outdoor staff of engineering section, including Chief Engineer, Superintending Engineer, Executive Engineers, and Deputy Executive Engineers etc., have already applied for mass casual leave (CL).

They have decided to hand over their SIM cards to Mr. Pandadas before going on leave.

The engineering section will not attend to drinking water, under ground drainage (UGD) and street lighting etc emergency services during these three days, they said.
