Water supply hit in Thiruvananthapuram

Water supply to parts of the city remained disrupted throughout Sunday owing to maintenance work at the Aruvikkara reservoir.

The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) had issued a notice late on Friday notifying the areas likely to be hit. Tank washing at Aruvikkara caused the areas coming under the Kuriathy section of the Authority to go dry. These included regions from Thampanoor to Shangumugham.

Water supply was restored only late night on Sunday, with KWA officials saying that it would take till midnight for sufficient pressure to build up.

Water bodies meet in Sep to discuss how to reduce NRW

PANAJI: Officials from various bodies dealing in water conservation will meet here next month to discuss outcome of a pilot project implemented in Goa by a Japanese agency to reduce wastage of water.

Officials from various water authorities will participate in a seminar here on September 5-6 where a decision may also be taken to implement Goa formula elsewhere in the country, an organiser said.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has been working with Goa Public Works Department on a project to reduce non revenue water in the state, which can ease the water problem to a large extent.

Non revenue water (NRW) is water that has been produced and is lost before it reaches the customer.

"To discuss the outcome of this project in Goa and to understand the ramifications of NRW reduction in India, JICA along with PWD Goa, is holding a two-day workshop in Panaji Goa," said Shinya Ejima, chief representative of JICA in India.

The seminar is likely to be attended by officials from - Delhi Jal Board, Public Health Department (PHED) Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Kerala Water Authority, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board, Pune Municipal Corporation, Tamil Nadu Water Supply & Drainage Board, PHED Manipur along with officials of PWD Goa.

The workshop aims to share issues, techniques and knowledge in NRW reduction with a view to facilitate and explore possibilities for NRW reduction in India, the organisers said.

The event is also likely to deliberate upon issues related to institutional structures reforms (such as water tariff, accounting systems).

The participants would also be informed on best practices in NRW being followed in other countries, the organisers added.
