50% water cut withdrawn by civic body

MUMBAI: The civic body withdrew the 50% water cut on Thursday after the Tansa main burst outside the city's limits.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, however, continued with a 20% water cut till 5pm and restored normal supply at 10pm on Thursday.

Work on connecting the 2400mm Tansa main started from 11am to 11pm on June 25 and BMC had planned a 10% water cut. But after that, more repairs were to be undertaken at the Tansa (west) main, when the main burst at Agra Road valve complex in Bhiwandi on Wednesday.

The Tansa (east) main burst at Chinchavli and near KB bridge. Ramesh Bamble, a hydraulic engineer, said the three rustedtrunk mains, were under hydraulic pressure while carrying out repairs. "It required 8-10 hours to repair one main," he said.

Machilipatnam to get Rs.42-crore drinking water project

T. Appala Naidu

‘The project will address the water woes for the next 30 years’

Machilipatnam Municipal authorities have submitted Rs.42-crore mega drinking water project proposal to the Public Health Engineering Department in Hyderabad.

The existing drinking water supply schemes cannot meet the increasing water requirement for the above 2-lakh population; hence Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy had sanctioning the project.

The estimations and construction plan for the water project was submitted to the Government in May. “Government is likely to clear the project in a few months as it is one of the Chief Minister’s assurances to Krishna District,” said Machilipatnam Municipal Commissioner S. Siva Rama Krishna.

The project is aimed at diverting water from Krishna Canal to Machilipatnam through underground pipeline system. Apart from existing nine drinking water storage reservoirs under the municipal limits, it has been planned to construct nine more reservoirs under the project.

“Despite there being no credible estimations on the requirement of the water in the municipality in coming years, the Rs.42-crore project will address the water woes for the next 30 years,” said Mr. Siva Rama Krishna. However, currently the urban dwellers are managing with insufficient supply of drinking water on a regular basis.

The municipal authorities pin hopes on getting clearance for the project in the current financial year start the works soon. The project will allow supply of purified drinking water and possibly 24x7 in summer months too.
