Pimpri Chinchwad civic body may get 100MLD from Andra dam

PUNE: The irrigation department has given an in-principle nod to give 100 MLD (million litres per day) water to PimpriChinchwad from Andra dam built across a tributary of Indrayani river. The civic body will construct a raw water treatment plant.

The civic administration has prepared a proposal stating that water can be drawn from Indrayani river in Chikhli-Talawade area by constructing a Kolhapur type weir. The water treatment plant is proposed to be constructed on a plot measuring 15.61 hectare which is reserved as government grazing land. The civic body has sought the transfer. The civic body will invite suggestions and objections from citizens regarding change in land use and send the proposal to the state government for a final approval.

Pravin Ladkat, executive engineer of the PCMC water supply department, said, "The state irrigation department agreed in-principle to give 100 MLD water from Andra dam to the corporation. We expect the state government to give its final approval soon. We will need land for constructing the water treatment plant. We have sought the land from town planning department. PCMC intends to supply the treated water to areas like Chikhli, Talawade, Moshi, Charholi and Dudulgaon. Once these areas get the water from Andra dam then there will be no need to supply them drinking water from Pavana river and this saved water from Pavana river can be used elsewhere."

PCMC at present draws 420 MLD water from Pavana river at Ravet and supplies it to the entire city. It is looking for new water sources to meet the water requirements for the next 20 to 40 years.

Godavari waters for twin cities by August next

The drinking water woes of twin cities will certainly be overcome by August next year with both the Godavari Phase I and Krishna Phase III to be completed by then, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister M. Mahidhar Reddy said here on Tuesday.

Seeking to allay misgivings of Congress members M. Ranga Reddy and M. S.Prabhakar Rao in the Legislative Council, the Minister said works were in full swing under both the schemes. Of 186 km long pipeline to be laid to bring Godavari waters from Yellampally barrage in Karimnagar to Ranga Reddy, 126 km pipeline has been laid.

The Minister said there was no dearth of funds for the Rs.3,378 crore project to supply 172 mgd of water for twin cities. While Rs.1,980 crore was sanctioned, Rs.1,280 crore had been spent so far. The HUDCO sanctioned Rs.1,000 crore loan for the project, he told the House.

The Krishna Phase III project would be completed by June, 2014.

From this year, rainwater harvesting would be implemented in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation area and an action plan had been formulated to improve the ground water table. The HMDA, GHMC and NGOs were working jointly to protect lakes in the twin cities. About 50 to 50 tanks were fenced and full tank levels were being marked to prevent encroachments, he disclosed.
