Water supply restored

Staff Reporter

The Kerala Water Authority has said the water supply in the city that was disrupted in several areas, catered to by the Observatory Hill reservoir, was restored by noon on Thursday.

The disruption in supply was following a burst on the transmission mainline bringing water to the city from Aruvikkara on Wednesday.

Works completed

KWA Chief Engineer (Southern Region) P. Sreekumaran Nair said the repair works were completed early on Thursday, and that pumping had begun by 9 a.m.

Supply was restored in most areas by noon, and in some elevated areas by evening.

Snags

But in case of any snags, public in need of water could contact the KWA for tanker supply by calling on 85476-38181 or by sending an SMS to the same number.

They could also call the Emergency and Helplines on 0471-2322674, 155313 (toll free), 0471-2328654, and 2328992 (extension for both - 400).

Water supply to the capital was hit on Wednesday after the main transmission pipeline bringing water from Aruvikkara to the city burst at Vazhayila.

The 1,200-mm pre-stressed concrete pipe ruptured around 7.30 am, spewing water at a great height and flooding the Peroorkada-Vazhayila Road.

Water supply to Medical College, Statue, Vanchiyoor, Chackai, Palayam, Mannanthala and Kudappanakkunnu areas was disrupted following the incident.

The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) launched a major trouble-shooting exercise immediately afterwards. Water supply is expected to be restored by Thursday morning, KWA Chief Engineer (Distribution - South) Sreekumaran Nair said.

The leak is being plugged by replacing the broken portion of the concrete pipe with a mild-steel section. Both sides of the pipe are being joined by welding. The supply will be restored only after the welded portions cool.

With water supply hit, the City Corporation despatched water tankers to the affected areas. Filling points for the tankers were arranged at the PTP Nagar reservoir and the Observatory Hill reservoir.

The pipe-burst caused traffic snarls for hours with the water flooding the Peroorkada-Vazhayila Road.

Traffic regulations were already in place in the region as part of laying the new Aruvikkara-Peroorkada transmission pipeline. This further added to the traffic problems on Wednesday.

The burst, in fact, occurred near the area where the pipe replacement work of the KWA was going on. Water flowed into the pits dug for the laying of pipes, disrupting the work.

Meters being Replaced

T’Puram: The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is replacing the defunct water meters as part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for the City Corporation for free. Those who wish to replace meters have to apply to the JNNURM Water Project Division at Observatory Hills before June 25, an official release said.  Meters in the city, Vattiyoorkavu, Sreekariyam and Kudappanakkunnu areas are being replaced in this manner.

Pipe-replacement Work on Track

T’Puram: The Kerala Water Authority has completed more than half of the pipe-replacement work between Aruvikkara and Peroorkada. The project to replace the old pre-stressed concrete (PSC) pipes with mild steel (MS) pipes is expected to end the menace of repeated pipe-bursts.

“The work is going on. We have time till November. But we hope to complete it before that. More than 50 per cent of the work is over already. The only problem is with the interference of the monsoon. The rain is adversely affecting the work,” said KWA Chief Engineer Sreekumaran Nair.

Water supply to be restored by noon

A major pipeline-burst on the Aruvikkara-Observatory Hill transmission mainline of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) early on Wednesday is likely to affect water supply to several areas in the city till noon on Thursday.

The pipeline burst near the Anarkali Mandapam at Vazhayila on a stretch where the 1200-mm pre-stressed concrete line narrows down to 900 mm. A KWA team began repairs around 9 a.m., by first digging out the 900-mm pipe. It will be replaced by a mild steel (MS) pipe. The MS pipe has been brought from Aruvikkara, where work on replacing the existing 1200-mm PSC pipeline with MS pipes is progressing.

KWA Chief Engineer (Southern Region) P. Sreekumaran Nair told The Hindu that incessant rain had hampered the work to remove the broken pipe, with mud slipping into the trench that was dug. A mud retaining structure would have to be put in place to enable smooth progress of the work.

The replacement MS pipe is likely to be put in place and welded late at night and trial pumping would be possible only by Thursday morning. Normal supply was expected to be restored by noon on Thursday, he said, adding that efforts were on to speed up the process.

This is the first major burst in about a month after a series of similar bursts on the 1200-mm pipeline at four points on February 25. It has forced the utility to stop pumping from the Aruvikkara reservoir to the Observatory Hill tank. Water supply was disrupted in a few elevated areas near Peroorkada and other areas catered to by the Observatory Hill tank, including Vazhuthacaud, Vellayambalam, Statue, PMG, Pattom, Medical College, Pattoor, Pettah, Kannammoola, Chakka and the airport area.

The KWA is making arrangements for tanker supply of water to the affected areas, officials said. The public can call up the Emergency and Helplines on 0471-2322674, 155313 (toll free), 0471-2328654 and 2328992 (extension for both - 400).
