Surat residents heave a sigh of relief as water supply restored

SURAT: Residents in the walled city areas have heaved a sigh of relief following the restoration of the water pipeline punctured during the digging exercise by the bridge contractor of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).

From the past two weeks, the residents in Chowk Bazaar, Mughalsarai, Bhagal, Mahidhapura, Hodi Bungalow, Sagrampura, etc were facing water shortage due to the leakage in the underground water line during the ongoing construction work of the Katargam fly-over bridge.

However, the civic officials had blamed the Gujarat Gas Company Limited (GGCL) for puncturing the underground water lines during the laying of the PNG network in the area. But, investigations led to the fact that the underground water lines were actually damaged by the bridge contractor.

A senior civic officer said, "The hydraulic department had taken up the immediate repairs of the water line punctured during the digging exercise and that it is completely restored."

GGCL sources said the water pipeline damage location is about 1 kilometer away from the GGCL site and that it was damaged by SMC contractor while doing piling work for the bridge near Hanuman Mandir in Katargam.

Lucknow Municipal Corporation, irrigation department to work together to address water crisis

LUCKNOW: In a bid to make more potable water available in the city, Lucknow divisional commissioner Sanjiv Saran has asked the officials of Lucknow Municipal Corporation and Irrigation department to bridge the gap at the earliest. He also said that a long-term programme should be made to address the problem.

"Currently, the availability of water in the city is 500 MLD, while the demand is hovering at 750 MLD mark.

In order to reduce the gap, a viable scheme has to be put in place, so that the problem could be nuetralised by 2045," said Saran while chairing a meeting to free Gomti of pollution and sewage management.

Officials said that efforts are made by the LMC to address the water shortage in Jankipuram and Alambagh, while the irrigation department has been requested to release 150 MLD water.

The divisional commissioner also suggested ways to find temporary solution to the prevailing water crisis by utilising the water of Moradabad canal and Ghaghra canal.

Special body to monitor water usage sought

Former Mayors P R Ramesh, G Huchchappa and some former corporators submitted a memorandum to the CM Siddaramaiah requesting him to constitute a special authority to monitor water usage and to pass laws required to regulate water usage in the city.

Speaking to the reporters, Ramesh said, “We can generate at least 12 tmcft of water by efficiently harvesting the rain water and treating the sewerage generated in the city. Nearly 40 per cent of the water that is pumped into the city goes unaccounted for and the government should do whatever is necessary to minimise it.”

Ramesh wanted the government to make the laying of duel pipelines mandatory in the new layouts for pumping treated water and drinking water and focus on effectively harvesting the rain water for recharging the groundwater.

Huchchappa accused the BBMP Council of neglecting the issues related to the city. He said that the corporators lack foresight about the problems that the city might face. They should focus on conserving the water and channelising the alternate sources of water, he observed.

Pay Contractors Online: Councillor

Yediyur Councilor N R Ramesh has urged Commissioner Siddaiah to adopt an online system for payment of bills to contractors. In a letter to the Commissioner, Ramesh alleged that contractors end up paying 25 per cent of the amount sanctioned for works to officers at BBMP to move their files. Adopting online system will bring more transparency, he said.

The contractors should send the photograph of completed works to Commissioner’s official email ID. The Commissioner should send it to the Zonal Commissioner who should inspect the spot. Zonal Commissioners should send a certified copy of the same to Commissioner, he said. Ramesh also said that if they follow online system BBMP can save up to 25 per cent cost. “We have developed a software through which BBMP can adopt online payment,” he said.

T Sheshadri, IT Advisor, BBMP, said he has received instructions from Special Commissioner K R Niranjan to look into it.
