Newly added areas under BBMP to get water on a trial basis from August 27

Following the government’s decision to undertake a trial run of supplying drinking water under the II Stage of the IV Phase of the Cauvery project from August 27, a decision has been taken not to levy road-cutting fee on households seeking water connection in the 54 newly added wards of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

Drinking water will be supplied to two lakh households that were once under the seven city municipal councils (CMCs) and one town municipal council (TMC) which are now part of the BBMP. Greater Bangalore was created in 2007 by merging these seven CMCs and one TMC as well as 110 villages with the erstwhile Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP).

This was announced by Minister for Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) S. Suresh Kumar here on Tuesday.

BBMP charges Rs. 500 for cutting a foot of road for laying water pipes to households from the main. Apart from this, officials demand bribe ranging from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh from each household for granting permission to cut the road, according to sources.

Mr. Kumar said two lakh households in 54 wards of the BBMP would be able to get water connection. The house owners could seek connections in September and October.

Plumbers trained

BWSSB has trained 70 plumbers to provide water connection. Eight to 10 plumbers would be assigned to undertake works in each ward. Besides paying for the taps, pipes and meter, each household would have to pay Rs. 2,400 to the plumber. Households would get regular drinking water supply from October, he said.

A total of 500 million litres of water per day (MLD) would be supplied to these areas under the project, which was taken up with the aid from Japan International Cooperation Agency. With the addition of 500 MLD, a total of 1,400 MLD water would be supplied to the city, the Minister said.

Noting the drinking water shortage in the 110 villages that were merged with the BMP, he said an expert committee had been set up to identify surface water sources to ensure potable water to these villages. Discussions were on with the Water Resources Department to mitigate water shortage in these villages, Mr. Kumar said.

Survey

A private company had been assigned the task of conducting a survey to find out the extent of pilferage in the supply of drinking water in the southern parts of the city, the Minister said.

Vadodara municipal corporation opposition raises eyebrows over water tank project

VADODARA: The opposition in the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has opposed the construction of an overhead water tank and sumps at Vijaynagar on the Gorwa-Laxmipura Road. It has demanded that the project should be relocated.

Opposition leader and Congress councillor Chinnam Gandhi has stated that the project was approved by the standing committee of the civic body on July 27. Gandhi said that Vijaynagar was a slum pocket that had existed since 35 years at the plot that was selected for the project. Gandhi saidthat water, drainage and power connections had also been provided at Vijaynagar.

Gandhi alleged that the site was selected for the project to ensure that the slums were removed. This, he claimed, was being done to help certain realtors. He said that if the project was to be implemented, the residents of Vijaynagar should be rehabilitated first.

Gandhi claimed that the VMC water supplied department had earlier turned down a demand for setting up the water tank with sumps stating that the city had a master plan in place for its requirements till 2018. He claimed that it was stated that the in the command area where the tank had been suggested there was no plan to set up one under the master plan. Gandhi has threatened to conduct an agitation over the issue.

Pune Municipal Corporation not yet decided on withdrawal of water cuts

PUNE: Even though the irrigation department has started releasing water from Khadakwasla dam into the Mutha right bank canal which supplies water to the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is undecided on the withdrawal of water cuts.

"The civic administration has not yet tabled a proposal to withdraw the existing water cuts. However, we will raise the issue with the administration and take a decision," said mayor Vaishali Bankar, speaking to reporters on Monday.

Khadakwasla dam is almost filled to capacity and water is now being released at a rate of 1,300 cusecs (1 cusec = 28.317 litres per second). This will continue for the next seven days. The water discharged into the canal enables the PMC to lift additional water for the city as well as benefits smaller towns like Daund and Indapur.

"The state has to issue directions to withdraw the water cuts. Only then can the PMC take a final decision and regularize water supply," said a PMC official.

Since March 1, there has been a 10 per cent water cut in the city, with most areas getting water only in the morning.

The state irrigation department has earmarked 11.5 TMC quota of water for Pune, but the city draws over 14 TMC water from the reservoirs of the Khadakwasla, Temghar, Varasgaon and Panshet dams. The quota is higher than the normal requirement, yet the city faces a water crisis because of distribution losses and PMC's water mismanagement .
