A new wave of hop in Kadu Malleswara ward

BANGALORE: Expresso had published a report titled “Ward Wallows in filth”, citing the perfunctory attitude of the authorities concerned in taking up development work in Kadu Malleswara ward. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) had taken up replacement of old sanitary pipes. However, they failed to asphalt the dug up portion of the road. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike clarifies: The Assistant Executive Engineer of Malleswaram division has visited this ward and submitted a report on the various issues being faced by the residents here. BWSSB has dug up the roads in order to replace old water pipelines.

Once these water pipelines are restored, development of roads shall commence. Instructions have been given to BWSSB, to make use of WMM stones in order to ensure better quality asphalting as well as longer maintenance.

Other work including tarring of roads, segregation of garbage disposal and drain work shall be taken up shortly.

Water Board to extend supply

HYDERABAD: With copious inflows into three major water sources, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) wants to extend daily water supply to four lakh customers in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) core area (erstwhile MCH area) from January 1, 2011.

"The Water Board is presently supplying daily water to nearly two lakh households in GHMC core area. Due to considerable inflows into Manjira, Osmansagar and Himayatsagar reservoirs in the past four months, we are steadily adding new areas to the daily water supply list. We have set a target to reach four lakh customers by January, 2011," HMWS&SB director-technical S Prabhakar Sharma told TOI.

Daily water supply had commenced in November, 2008, for 3.32 lakh connections in GHMC core area, Kukatpally and L B Nagar municipal circles. Later, the daily supply was discontinued as water level hit dead storage at Osmansagar.

The Water Board is presently drawing 335 million gallons a day (MGD) from the three reservoirs. In addition to the piped water supply, about 25 MGD of ground water was also being trapped by consumers. Due to the recent rains in the catchment areas, there was considerable inflows into the three reservoirs. As a result, the total storage stood at 39.091 TMC as against the available capacity of 39.733 TMC, he added.

The Water Board supplies 82.47 MGD to 12 surrounding municipal circles and 3.80 MGD to the Secunderabad Cantonment. The HMWS&SB has nearly three lakh customers in the surrounding municipal circles. Worst-hit are the municipal circles of Malkajgiri, where water is supplied once in 10 days, and Alwal, where it is once in four days.

"Wherever daily water is not possible in surrounding municipal circles, it will be provided at least on alternate days instead of the present once in four to five days," the official said.

Residents protest against irregular water supply

Staff Reporter | Bhopal

With the monsoon barely over and water supply woes already inundating several old city areas, over a hundred residents protested and took to the streets and attempted to block traffic in the vicinity of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) hydrant in the Apsara Talkies locality on Sunday morning.

The agitated residents said water supply in their locality was erratic and not on schedule for many days. Senior officials of the district administration, including SDM and police officials rushed to the area to pacify the agitators.

Sunil Shrivastava — the official in-charge of Water Works Department at BMC, said water supply was made through tankers to a few localities there but still people say there is shortage of water.

The residents stop the protest after getting assurances from district administration officials, who told them that now the supply would be made in accordance with the schedules.

The situation in the area, however, remained edgy for around two hours, as officials at the Aishbagh police station confirmed that nearly 150 local residents, led by Shivshankar Shukla, assembled near the hydrant and attempted to stage a chakka jaam.

Protesters said that since there are no pipelines in their localities, water is supplied through tankers once in every three days. Even the timing of the irregular water supply is not fixed, they added.

BMC officials later claimed that the issue has been sorted out and regular water supply in accordance with a fixed schedule would now be maintained.
