Water shortage at Chakkaraparambu

KOCHI: Chakkaraparambu will face the coming elections as division No 46. Represented by K S Sulfath, it is to be in the general category next time. Though the LDF enjoys a loyal following here, with the addition of new voters in large numbers, the UDF hopes that the situation will change in their favour.

The councillor of the division K S Sulfath says the division fund has been utilised for all the work that comes under its purview like concreting pocket roads, changing streetlights to SV lamps in all the main roads and byroads, putting new lights where there were none, maintenance of drains, tarring of few roads etc. She says old and dilapidated pipes have all been replaced with PVC pipes across the division.

The councillor has given priority to the maintenance of roads. Funds from the People’s Plan scheme, the Corporations’ general fund and even the division fund have been used for this work. “Some new roads, which were handed over to the Corporation, were tarred from scratch, by leveling, metalling and tarring.”  She claims, around 25 roads including various byroads in the division have been tarred.  “Bigger roads like Pottamkavu Road, Chakkaraparambu Road, Puthiya Road, Shobha Road etc have been tarred. The maintenance work of the side walls of the two streams in the  area - Kareethodu and Kathambhayil Thodu was also done,” she adds.

The councillor admits that shortage of potable water in some areas like Ulakampaara is indeed the biggest problem here. A new project to solve this problem to a certain extent is now in the pipeline. “A new tank is to be built using the SC/ST fund from the People’s Plan scheme. The tender for this work has been issued.” For now  the Corporation is supplying tanker water in this area.”

` 7 to 8 lakh from the KSUDP fund has been allotted for basic infrastructure development to be carried out in the Kannoth Colony. This work is yet to start. Voters at Chakkaraparambu, especially at the Ulakampara area, are most concerned about the shortage of potable water.

The area faces severe water shortage throughout the year, though they manage to a certain extent with rain water.  Presently they are almost totally dependent on tanker water.  Residents at some other areas like Pottamkaavu also face water shortage during some months. Waterlogging troubles some areas in the division during rain.

Raining good news: Dams full, officials say no more water cuts

Express News Service Tags : monsoon, raining good news Posted: Mon Sep 13 2010, 07:40 hrs Updated: Mon Sep 13 2010, 07:41 hrs

Pune:  As the rains have taken a break for the past couple of days, the sizeable downpour last week has filled the dams that provide water to the city. The aggregate water in the four dams — Khadakwasla, Panshet, Warasgaon and Temghar — has crossed 90 per cent. The citizens can heave a sigh of relief as officials have promised that there would be no water cuts.

While the Khadakwasla and Panshet dams are almost full, the other two have water storage above 70 per cent. “Thanks to a good spell of rains over the past few days, all the dams have a sound water storage. The aggregate water storage in the four dams together is now approximately 92 per cent. While Khadakwasla and Panshet are almost full, Temghar is 75 per cent and Warasgaon 88 per cent full. The total capacity of the dams is 29 TMC and the storage is 26.5 TMC now. We need another spell of good rains to fill them to the brim,” said SN Bolbhat, executive engineer of Khadakwasla Irrigation Division. “In August, rains had filled the dams only between 60 and 65 per cent. We got another spell in the first week and the situation improved immediately.”

The situation in the neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad is also good, as the Pavana dam that provides water to the industrial township is 100 per cent full. Pimpri-Chinchwad, which has a population of over 15 lakh, gets water from the dam located about 50 km away. Unlike the Pune Municipal Corporation, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation had not effected any water cut.  Other dams in the district also provide a good picture in terms of water availability as Chaskaman, Wadivale, Bhatghar, Vir, Ujani and a few more dams are 100 per cent full. The Mulshi dam, one of the popular hangouts of Puneites, is almost 97 per cent full.

The rains had given a miss in June and July, compelling the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to implement water cut for a few days. Avinash Surve, superintending engineer of the Pune Irrigation Circle, said there was no need of any water cuts in the city with the improvement in water storage. “Right now, there is no water cut. Since the water storage is good, there is no need of water cuts in future also.”

Daily water supply in core city areas

HYDERABAD: After five months, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) resumed daily water supply to the core city from Saturday as the two main reservoirs Osmansagar and Himayatsagar have reached full tank level (FTLs).

The Water Board had suspended drawing water from Osmansagar in May as it reached dead storage level.

"Now, the daily water supply to the core areas have been restored. The present water level at Osmansagar is 1,788 feet, while its FTL is 1790 feet. We started drawing 18 million gallons per day (MGD) from Osmansagar," HMWS&SB director-technical, S Prabhakara Sharma told TOI.

At Himayatsagar, the water level has touched 1,757 feet against its FTL of 1,763 feet. Also, the water level at Singur has reached 1717.440 feet against the FTL of 1717.850 feet, a senior Water Board official said.

The HMWS&SB is also ensuring bulk water supply to Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB), Osmania University and Military Engineering Services (MES), Railways and industrial units according to schedule, the official added.
