Water scarcity at Kunumpuram

KOCHI: Kunnumpuram is represented by the Mayor of Kochi, Mercy Williams. LDF is hoping for a victory here the second time around whereas UDF is hoping for a win in the division which has supported UDF candidates many times previously.

The division is in the general category this time. Apart from basic infrastructure development, other projects like the total computerisation project has been implemented here. Three medical camps have also been organised here in the last five years.

Division Committee Member, Udayakumar A G says, “A lot of effort has been made to solve basic problems like shortage of potable water and waterlogging.

The potable water problem at Nikathu has been solved by changing the pipes. Much has been done to improve the roads in the division as well.” He claims that around 2 crores from various funds like the People’s Plan Fund, Division Fund and General Fund have been spend on tarring around 22 roads in the division like Mannam Road, Ambedkar Road, Peeliyaad Road, Metal Box Road, Poysha Road etc. Two new roads has been made by widening and concreting the existing byroad in the Manappuram Colony area and at Peeliyaad. Drainage has also been constructed or maintained across the division. The drain at Rao Colony has solved the waterlogging problems in that area.

Says Udayakumar, “Vadathodu, a stream in the division has been protected by building side walls by spending 25 lakhs from the People’s Plan Fund. This work is still going on.

Various funds were utilised to protect the Manmuttappuram river by building walls on its sides”.

According to him, 30 houses were sanctioned in the division under Basic Services to the Urban Poor scheme, another ten houses were sanctioned under the Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana. And now a list of 175 people has been recognised under the EMS housing scheme (EMS Sampoorna Paarpida Padhati).

He adds that street lights have been installed across the division and new posts have been put and new lines drawn to provide street lights wherever needed. Additional funds from the corporation have been spent on building a library and a homoeo clinic.

Udayakumar says that twenty eight lakhs has been allotted under Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project for basic infrastructure development at Manappuram Colony. Tender has been issued for this work. Residents at Kunnumpuram complaints of waterlogging at many places especially near Brahmasthana, Kunnumpuram and V A Padi. They say that shortage of potable water is a problem in a few areas. There is also a need for more public space, as according to residents, public spaces have all been encroached by various people while authorities have failed to keep track of this.

Builders continue to seek water

Bangalore, September 1, DHNS:

Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) minister Katta Subramanya Naidu’s recent announcement that no new water connections will be given to any new projects in core Bangalore area has not deterred 38 agencies from filing for 'no objection certificates' (NOC).

As many as 10 groups are also awaiting approval for water supply and sanitary connections.

The minister had decided not to sanction fresh water connections to multi-storeyed residential and commercial apartments in the BWSSB limits till 2011 end in the core areas due to severe water scarcity.

However, this does not cover single residential buildings (ground plus three floors). An official from BWSSB said every day many builders are applying for NOC and new water connections for apartments. "Normally we reject their appeals. However, we suggest them to send a letter to the minister directly. If the minister approves them, we will sanction," he added.

Most of the applications are from builders from the old CMC areas which have now been added to BBMP. There are around 72 new wards which still depend on groundwater. The minister recently said that the ambitious Phase II of Cauvery stage IV will be completed before the scheduled date.

Another official from BWSSB said that nearly Rs 260 crore has been collected as 'beneficiary capital contribution' towards water supply from these new areas; although many residents are yet to pay the amount.

CMC picks Kundamestri over Bethri project

Madikeri, September 1, DHNS:

City Municipal Council (CMC) approved the 'Kundamestri' drinking water project during the Council special meet on Tuesday, amidst fierce opposition from opposition members.

Council has decided to send a report in this regard to the State government. The meet held to make final decision on Bethri or Kundamestri project was presided over by CMC President P D Ponnappa.  Within half an hour of the meet, Rs 30 crore Kundamestri project was approved without much discussion.

Congress, JD(S) and independent members T M Ayyappa, Abdul Razak, Chummi Devaiah, Sunil Nanjappa, Muneer Ahmed, K T Baby Mathew and Dhanalakshmi opposed the project and supported implementation of a Rs 7 crore  project approved earlier.

However, MLA M P Appachu Ranjan not only supported the Kundamestri project but also expressed contempt against the opposition members for their baseless arguement.

“The Centre has denied funds for this project but State is ready to provide monetary aid for the same. Let the project be approved as soon as possible. If Bethri project is undertaken, then there will be drought during summer. Kundamestri lake has adequate quantity of water all round the year. Hence, the whole discussion in this regard is irrelevant because the option is obvious,” said Ranjan hinting at the immediate need for providing adequate drinking water to Madikeri city.

Ranjan who was raged by the attitude of the opposition members said that the opposition members are opposing the project for the sake of opposition and hence the project should be approved without any further discussion. Opposition members said that they are against the Rs 30 crore project hence adequate time for discussion must be provided.

Opposition Leader T M Ayyappa said that the Rs 30 crore project will be a burden on the people hence implementation of Rs 7 crore project will be advisable.

Independent member Muneer Ahmed said that Kundamestri does not have adequate water to pump to the city hence looking at Bethri would be better. Contradicting this, ruling party member K S Ramesh said that water in Bethri dries up during summer and further maintenance cost will run higher for Bethri.

BJP Member Sathish Pai supporting the Kundamestri project said that Kundamestri lake gets filled during rainy season and there is always enough water in the lake. Hence, kundamestri is a better option.

However, going by what Ranjan had to say, P D Ponnappa without giving any space for discussion straight away asked the members to lift their hands in negation to the project. Seven members raised their hand to oppose the project.
