Water shortage: civic body cracks down on car washing centres

Pune: Considering the probability of water scarcity, the civic administration has taken action against the car washing centres for using potable water for washing the cars. Civic officials have snapped eight water connections to car washes in Kharadi and Wadgaon Sheri.

In its press release, the civic administration has said, "Due to the scorching heat, there is a dearth of potable water in Pune, which is why, there is a necessity of planning for in that direction."

As a part of the precautionary measures, the civic officials made a survey of car washing centres in the city. The areas surveyed under this were: Wadgaon Sheri, Viman Nagar, Chandan Nagar, Kharadi, Alandi Road. From Kharadi, they disconnected six water connnections, while from Wadgaon Sheri they disconnected two water connections.

The action was started from April and the washing centres include: Shivshankar washing centre (Kamal Nagar), Todkar Automobiles Ichhatrupti Society), Sunil Service Centre Shriram Society), Shahnaz Service Centre (Aple Ghar Society), National Washing Centre (Aple Ghar Society), Babaj Service Centre (Nagar Road), Ashtavinayak Motor Works (Nagar Road), Shrikalbhairavnath Washing Centre (near Mundhwa Bridge), Azad Washing Centre(Nagpur Chawl), Hero Honda workshop (Shantinagar Corner). Meanwhile, the Bhavani Peth and Dhole Patil ward offices of the PMC took action against the vendors selling food items in the open on the handcarts. Officials of the Dhole Patil ward office cracked down on these vendors on Dhole Patil Road, Photozinco, Pune Station, Mangaldas Road and Narpatgiri chowk.

From this, 385 kgs of eatables was disposed off. The Bhavani Peth office confiscated 250 kgs of eatables and five gas-cylinders, out of which three are domestic gas cylinders.

Clean water to be provided in all Punjab cities, says Sukhbir

Chandigarh: Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Tuesday said the State Government would provide clean water to people by installing Reverse Osmosis system (ROs) in every municipal ward in all cities.

Speaking to media persons after inaugurating an elevated road project worth Rs.223 crore in Amritsar, Mr. Badal said in the first phase five towns would be covered under RO System to provide bottled water at 10 paise per litre.

The RO system has been a great success in the villages of Malwa, Doaba and Majha and over 400 villages have already been covered under this, he said.

Promising to change the face of Amritsar in the next one year, Mr. Badal said the holy city would soon have a Rs.600-crore urban renewal package. Under this, the projects would focus on rejuvenating sewage disposal network and water supply network of Amrtisar and adjoining cities like Ajnala, Tarntaran, Majitha. - PTI

‘Funds will be released once plans are submitted'

SHIMOGA: State Bhartiya Janata Party president and local MLA K.S. Eshwarappa said here on Monday that the municipal authorities should take steps to solve the drinking water problem in certain parts of the city, including Venkatesh Nagar, Sevalal Nagar, Bommanakatte.

He was presiding over a meeting convened at the Deputy Commissioner's office to review the works of the City Municipal Council, Mangalore Electricity Supply Company, Public Works Department and Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board.

He suggested that the permanent water supply works be taken up in areas where water was being supplied through tankers and assured that the Government would release funds once plans and estimates were submitted.

He instructed that the development of roads and drainage system in the city limits be taken up on priority and suggested that the action plan be prepared to utilise the Rs. 10 crore sanctioned for it.

Superintending Engineer of Public Works Department Kantharaj assured the widening and concretisation of B.H. Road would be completed within 20 days.

He also asked for a revised list of names for the allotment of Ashraya houses.

Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pandey, president of the City Municipal Council N.J. Rajasekhar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Sri Rangaiah and the Municipal Commissioner Jayanna were present.
