Water problem: women vent their ire on MLA Nani

Commissioner asked to initiate action against officials

ELURU: City MLA Alla Kalikrishna Srinivas (Nani) tasted the ire of a group of angry women, who were reportedly vexed with the drinking water problem in the current summer during the Prajapadham programme at Gollayagudem on the city outskirts on Wednesday.

They complained that the hand bores in their area did not work and the water supplied by the Municipal Corporation of Eluru (MCE) by tankers was inadequate.

They said MCE authorities were reluctant to undertake repair works in spite of their repeated complaints.

The MLA said the problem would be mitigated after the completion of a reservoir under construction with a storage capacity of 5 lakh litres in the locality.

He asked the Municipal Commissioner to initiate action against the officials concerned for their alleged indifference in attending the drinking water problem in the area.

Mr. Nani promised to ensure that there would be no drinking water problem in the city by next summer.

He said the municipal corporation had taken up eight reservoirs in different parts of the city for storage of water in the summer, besides extension of pipeline system to the uncovered areas on the outskirts.

Pune: Global warming is not far from us. Present water shortage in the city is also one of the ill effects of the global warming,” MLC Vandana Chavan said on Wednesday.

Chavan, who recently got elected to the state legislative council unopposed, was speaking during an event where she felicitated by MIT School of Government (MITSOG).

Chavan urged for stopping growing human intervention in nature. “The main reason behind water shortage is global warming. It has led to food shortage, which has ultimately reflected into inflation. We need water conservation projects to save water,” she said.

Chavan stressed the need for use of solar energy too. “Presently we generate most of the electricity through burning the coal. It has limitations though. We have to think of alternative energy resources,” she said.

She also said that the people should actively participate in public life. “Responsibility of a citizen does not finish after voting. One should actively participate in public issues and express opinions.”

Veteran journalist Madhukar Bhave was present as the chief guest of the function.

V D Karad, founder director of MIT Group of Institutions welcomed the guests. Executive director of MITSOG Rahul Karad proposed vote of thanks.
