Katta: Resort to rain water harvesting

BANGALORE: To satiate a city’s ever increasing water demand, BWSSB Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu has put his bets on rain water harvesting.

The minister on Friday said the government planned to collect rainwater from stormwater drains and use it for potable purposes after treatment. This project will cost the state exchequer Rs 2,000 crore, he said.

Naidu aims to collect 12 TMC of water through RWH.

As all the water allotted to the city from Cauvery would be exhausted, the rain water is the only easiest available alternative, he said.

“The collected water would be stored in some of the major lakes in the city after preliminary treatment and it would be treated once again before it is supplied to the city,” he said.

He said that BWSSB would disconnect connections to buildings that do not have RWH systems after May 27.

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board is planning to conduct 60 such awareness programs in the city.

Water price hike inevitable

IT, BT and BWSSB Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu on Friday said the Board is incurring losses as water rates have not been hiked for the the past six years.

The hike is inevitable, the BWSSB will go for it after summer, the minister said.

Vadodara: Helpline started after Dahod Cong MP protested before collector on Monday; Panchmahals service operational for a week

With handpumps and borewells running dry in various parts of Panchmahals and Dahod, the Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB) has launched helpline service in these districts. The service will allow people to register complaints with the department.

District officials say the helpline will be connected to the control rooms of the GWSSB teams, thereby allowing them to attend to repairs.

In Panchmahals, the helpline (02672-241941) has been functional for the last one week, said GWSSB Executive Engineer P K Dani. He said they have been getting about five to six calls everyday since the start of the helpline.

Dani said: “Although a drought-like condition is still far away, things will be difficult if there is no rain. Keeping these issues in mind, for the first time we decided to start a control room, which will work as a helpline for the affected people. The water crisis is mainly due to scarce rainfall last year.” He said 467 villages, where the handpumps have been installed, will be covered by the helpline, adding that most of the calls came from the interior areas where the handpumps have stopped working.

“Since the start of the helpline, we have received calls only about handpumps that are not working or are drying up in the interior areas,” said Dani, adding that the calls were mainly from Kadana and Santrampur taluka, which serves as a catchment area of the Kadana Dam on the Mahi.

“Most handpumps are not working in Santrampur and Kadana. Teams have been sent to these areas to take note of the situation,” added Dani. He further said that about 40 teams have been formed to take care of the situation.

Meanwhile, the helpline number for Dahod (02673-242165) was announced on Wednesday following Monday’s protest at the collectorate by Congress MP Dr Prabha Taviyad. She had submitted a memorandum to Dahod District Collector Lochan Shehera saying that 65 per cent of the handpumps in the district were not working. On Wednesday, Shehera handed over a letter to Dr Taviyad.

Unauthorised sewer users to pay cess from May

Come May and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) will levy sewerage cess on premises that do not have a water connection from the board but use its sewerage system.

Having got the go-ahead for its proposal from Chief Minister K Rosaiah during a board meeting recently, the HMWS&SB has decided to collect the charges from next month.

HMWS&SB officials told Expresso that tariff has been finalised for different categories (See Box). According to rough estimates, there are 3 to 4 lakh structures in Greater Hyderabad that do not have water connections but release sewage into the sewerage network maintained by the water board.

“We want to tap unauthorised users and expect to net Rs 3 to 4 crore per month,” board officials said. There are some 10,000 premises, mostly malls, function halls and hotels without the board’s water connection. They get water from other sources but most of them discharge their sewage into the board’s drains.

The board is currently collecting 35 percent of the water supply charges as sewage cess from its customers while others have been using its drains for free.
