100% hike in water tariff for firms

HyderabadThe state government has approved a 100 per cent hike in water tariff for the industries and the commercial category consumers. The tariff revision will earn the Water Board an additional Rs 300 crore per annum. Domestic consumers have been spared. The tariff was last revised in December 2011 for all consumer categories.

The Board meeting, chaired by Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, on Wednesday approved the tariff hike proposals submitted by the Water Board that stated that the frequent hike in electricity tariff has increased the power bill of the Water Board from Rs 35 crore to Rs 55 crore in just over a year.

MCC approves integrated bulk water supply scheme

Special Correspondent

The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) council on Tuesday approved the Rs. 327-crore integrated bulk water supply scheme for Mysore proposed near Hale Undavadi, around 2 km upstream of the Krishnaraja Sagar, under the transition phase of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

The scheme has been planned keeping in view the drinking water needs of Mysore city for the next 30 years.

The Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board had submitted the proposal based on suggestions from authorities at the JNNURM office, New Delhi.

MCC Commissioner P.G. Ramesh told The Hindu a detailed project report would be submitted to the Centre through the State agencies for final approval under JNNURM.

Earlier, the councillors took officials to task for “not properly estimating the costs for some projects, particularly drinking water projects, under JNNURM.” When an official admitted “lapse” in the estimates, the councillors questioned the seriousness of the officials in preparing the proposals. The council decided to seek grants for bearing the costs (contribution from the corporation as stipulated) from the government towards the projects whose cost estimates had escalated.

Water to cost more for Vizag units

Visakhapatnam, Dec. 4:   The water tariff for commercial semi-bulk supply and industrial use may be enhanced by the municipal authorities. The tariff for both the categories is proposed to be revised as the corporation is incurring 15 per cent more on the supply due to increase in power tariff and other expenses.

With the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation proposing to take up 24X7 water supply project under JNNURM, there are apprehensions that tariff may go up as meters would be fixed.

GVMC Commissioner M. V. Satyanarayana has said there is no move to increase the tariff for the BPL population from Rs 60 a month and for middle and upper middle classes that mostly come under the Rs 120 a month category.

For industrial supply, the approval of the Visakhapatnam Industrial Water Supply Company (VISWCO) is needed. Presently, raw water and treated water are suppled at Rs 26 and Rs 36 a kl.
