Septic waste won’t stink any more

KOCHI: To tackle the growing septic tank waste, the Kochi Corporation has decided to start two new sewage treatment plants in the city. The tender procedures of the plants, which are to be started in West Kochi and East Kochi areas, have started.

The agency for constructing the plants will be the Kerala Water Authority (KWA). Once the plants are set up, sewage waste from households, offices and other establishments can be disposed of through pipelines specifically laid for it and treated at the plant. “We have initiated tender procedures for constructing two sewage plants. The plants will be a permanent solution to the problem of septic tank waste being dumped in various drains and water bodies in the city,’’ said Deputy Mayor C K Manisanker.

“We will be entrusting the construction of the plant to the KWA as it is the only agency with adequate expertise in the area,’’ he said. There is already a sewage plant run by the KWA at Elamkulam to cater to the needs of the central business district (CBD). But a large section of households and offices in the area are not using the facility. According to the residents in the area, the high rate charged for using the facility keeps them away.

According to Corporation and Health Department officials, one main reason for the mosquito menace in the city is leaking septic tanks. The sewage plant is expected to solve this problem.

AMC razes illegal structures near Gyaspur

AHMEDABAD: The estate department of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) authorities went hammer and tongs on the illegal structures constructed on land acquired for sewage treatment plant near Gyaspur on Tuesday.

The demolition was carried out in Aman Park and Fatima Park, near ice factory in Juhapura. More than 75 housing units, 800 m of running fence and 300 m compound wall were brought down.

Most of the structures were unoccupied. Deputy estate and town development officer VK Balat said, "The houses were illegally constructed on AMC land which was meant for sewerage treatment plant." According to AMC authorities 35,000 sq m of AMC land was made open by authorities.

Former sarpanch, Makhatmpur-Juhapura, Mirza Haji Baig accused AMC of highhandedness. Baig said, "These structures have been built under the very nose of AMC, but then the authorities turned a blind eye to them. These houses are owned by people mostly from the poor section."

AMC authorities deployed a team of 150 AMC officers from three municipal zones with five JCB machines.

Effective water management needed, says CMC Vice Prez
Kolar, Aug 19, DH News Service

The public should use water effectively and know water management, said CMC Vice President V K Rajesh in a press release here.

Staging protests, dharnas regarding water crisis are welcome but, the public should also see to it that drinking water is not used for other purposes, the Vice President stated.
Out of the 250 borewells,65 per cent of the borewells have gone dry. Water quantity is inadequate in the remaining borewells.

The Rajakaluve which supplies water to Kolaramma and Ammerahalli lakes have been filled with silt.

Added to that, there are many encroachments happening in the City which has added to the water crisis, he added.

Water bills
Only 15 per cent of the residents of the City have been paying water bills and the rest 85 per cent have been irregular in paying water bills which is a bad trend, he said adding that everybody should pay the bills on time; only then modernisation can be be brought in the water supply system and water problem can be solved, he stated.

A survey is being conducted against those who use water used for commercial purposes and if found guilty strict action will be taken against them.

Hotels, nursing homes, theatres and other establishments should make their own arrangements for water supply, the CMC Vice President said.

This time the district has not received usual rains, adding to water crisis. The CMC water is being used for cleaning vehicles, watering vegetable crops, flowers and others too. Many a times, water is wasted even from public taps which has to be avoided.

Borewells
The public should know that digging borewells is not the only solution for solving the problem. Today, getting water through borewells is not easy as the underground water table is depleted. The only way to solve the problem is to save water, the CMC Vice President stated.
