Women to head 3 corporations, 30 municipalities


 

Three Corporations and thirty Municipalities in the state would be governed by women chairpersons after the new dispensation assumes office in these civic bodies after the local body elections in September. The State Election Commission issued notification in this regard on Tuesday.

Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Kozhikode Corporations will have woman Mayors while in Kochi and Thrissur women hold the post of  deputy mayor.

 The municipalities which will have women chairpersons are  Attingal, Nedumangad  ( Thiruvananthapuram),  Punalur (Kollam) Thiruvalla  (Pathanamthitta) , Alappuzha, Chenganoor, Cherthala,  Kayamkulam  (Alappuzha), Changanaserry, Vaikom  (Kottayam),  North Paravur,  Irinjalakuda,  Kodungaloor and Chavakkad  ( Thrissur),  Ottapalam (Palakkad), Perinthalmanna, Ponnani, Tirur and Kottakkal  (Malappuram),  Koyilandi, Vadakara  (Kozhikode),  Kannur, Koothuparambu,  Payyanur, Thaliparambu,  Thalassery (Kannur), Kanhangad and Nileswaram (Kasargod).

  The chairperson posts of Paravur in Kollam and Chittoor - Thathamangalam in Palakkad district have been reserved for women from Scheduled Caste.

The chairperson posts of Guruvayur and Kunnamkulam municipalities have been reserved for Scheduled Tribes.  In the rest of 29 municipalities, deputy chairperson post would be held by women.

  The draft electoral rolls of seven municipalities including Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode Corporations and the newly-formed municipalities have been published.

 Complaints regarding the electoral roll would be collected at the respective local bodies till August 10 for which they will be open on public holidays on August 1, 8 and 9.

Deciding destiny: The draw of lots to identify reservation wards in grama panchayats being held under the supervision of District CollectorS. Lalithambika at the Collectorate Conference Hall in Pathanamthitta on Monday.

KOLLAM: Through a draw of lots procedure held at Ernakulam, the 28 divisions out of the 55 divisions in the Kollam City Corporation Council reserved for women have been identified. Out of the 28 reserved for women, 26 are in the general category and two in Scheduled Communities category.

The two divisions reserved for the Scheduled Community (women) category are Pattathanam and Mulankadakam. Two divisions have been reserved in the Scheduled Community (general) category and they are Thevally and Ramankulangara.

The 26 women (general) category divisions are Paalathara, Asramam, Udayamarthandapuram, Valathungal, Punnathanam, Karikode, Thirumullavaram, College Division, Bharanikavu, Kadappakada, Arunoottimangalam, Vattakayal, Thamarakulam, Shakthikulangara, Vadakumbhagam, Manakkad, Punthalathazham, Kureepuzha, Kollurvila, Vadakevila, Chathainakulam, Mulluvila, Kannimel, Akolil, Paalkulangara and Kayyalakkal.

In the Paravur Municipal Council, 16 wards have been reserved for women and out of that two — Parayilkavu and Vadakumbhagam — for the Scheduled community (women) category.

Two wards have been reserved in the Scheduled community (general) category and they are Vinayagar and Pasuman.

The 14 wards reserved for women in the general category are Peral, Attinpuram, Puthiyidam, Kottamoola, Kurikulam, Chillakkal, Pozhikara, Anchal Office, Manyankulam, Kurumal, Punchirkulam, Kallumkunnu, Pookulam and Yakshikavu.

In the Punalur Municipal council, 18 divisions have been reserved for women. Out of that two are in the Scheduled Community (women) category and they are Kallar and Thumbootu. One division is in the scheduled community (general) category and that is Maniyar.

The 16 divisions reserved for women in the general category are Kanjiramala, Chalakodu, Papermill, Nedunkayam, Sasthamkonam, Musavari, Nellipali, Vilakuvattam, Kalayanad, Placheri, Ayikarakonam, Kelankavu, Tholikodu, Power House, Komalamkunnu and Town.

In Pathanamthitta

In Pathanamthitta, identification of reserved wards in various grama panchayats was held through draw of lots at the Collectorate conference hall here on Monday.

The draw of lots was done by District Collector S. Lalithambika. Additional District Magistrate, H.Salimraj, was also present. The 54 grama panchayats in the district got a total of 492 reservation wards and 378 of them have been reserved for women, 51 for women belonging to Scheduled Caste and 60 reserved for SC.

The district has got three wards reserved for Scheduled Tribes.

KOCHI: The divisions represented by all the Standing Committee chairmen, except that of K.J. Sohan, the development committee chairman, became women reservation divisions. The division represented by A.B. Sabu, the UDF leader in the corporation council was also reserved for women. The number of divisions of the council has been increased to 74 from the existing 71.

The divisions reserved for women were selected through lucky draws held on Monday.

The new corporation divisions reserved for women and the councillors presently representing the division are the following: Division 18-Konam (K.R. Premakumar), 5 Mattanchery (TK. Ashraf), 49 Vyttila (K.K. Sivan), 38 Devankulangara (N. Sasi), 25 Chullikkal (T. K. Babu), 15 Eda Kochi North (K.J Basil), 19 Palluruthy Kacheripady (P.S. Viju), 61 Ravipuram (David Parambithara), 65 Kaloor South (K.V. Manoj), 11 Thoppumpady (K.J. Maxy), 57 Kadavanthra (C.K. Gopalan), 34 Puthukalavattom (M. Anilkumar), 42 Vennala (M.B. The division 59 has been reserved as Scheduled Caste general seat.

Seats in panchayats

The wards reserved for Scheduled Castes and women in 46 grama panchayats in the district were decided through a draw of lot held on Monday.

District Collector in-charge K.N. Raji chaired the draw of lot held at the conference hall of the district collectorate. The lot for deciding the wards to be reserved for Scheduled Caste community and women in the remaining panchayats will be held on Tuesday.

Out of the 719 wards in the 46 grama panchayats, 445 wards were reserved. While 364 wards were reserved for women, 46 were allocated to Scheduled Caste community members. Another 35 seats were reserved for women belonging to the Scheduled Caste community.

Eleven wards each were reserved for women in Elamkunnapuzha, Pallipuram, and Chellanam grama panchayats while ten wards each were set apart for women in Edathala, Kadungalloor, and Vadakekkara panchayats.

Panchayat Deputy Director A.P. Ajit Kumar, and Deputy Collector (Elections) C.K. Eliamma, were also present.
