CHENNAI: The State government has requested the Centre to provide a special package, on a 50:50 cost-sharing basis, to rehabilitate slum-dwellers in Chennai.

The request figured in the memorandum Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami presented to Union Minister for Urban Development, Housing and Poverty Alleviation Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday. The memorandum sought the support of the Central government for several urban development related issues.

“I request a special package under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Housing For All) mission to construct 1 lakh multi-storeyed flats over a period of four years at a total cost of Rs 10,000 crore,” the Chief Minister said.

Several other issues were highlighted in the memorandum, including securing financial assistance for a proposed 400 million litre per day (MLD) desalination plant, costing Rs 5312 crore, in Chennai. The Centre was requested to help secure project funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The Ministry of Urban Development was  also urged to approve smart city proposals for six cities, viz, Tiruchy, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Erode, Tiruppur and Dindigul.


The CM also appealed for the inclusion of Tamil Nadu co-operative federation as an implementing agency for the credit linked subsidy scheme under the Housing for All mission. Since the federation had vast reach among urban poor, its inclusion would help in effective implementation of the mission.

CMDA eyes fourth site for truck terminal

CHENNAI: Two years after then Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa announced in the Assembly that a truck terminal will be built at Ernavoor, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is still struggling to find land and has now zeroed in on a fourth site in neighbouring Tiruvallur district.

CMDA had earlier selected three locations for the `160 crore project. The first one was in Ernavoor. It was shelved as the land was being considered for developing a housing project for flood-affected families by the State housing board.

The second site was within  Sathangadu Iron and Steel Market, which was opposed by traders. Later,  planners advocated 66 acres of marsh land opposite the Sathangadu Iron and Steel Market, which was considered as a water course.

The third site now requires clearance from Public Works Department (PWD). The Tiruvallur Collector in the report has said that the opinion of PWD should be obtained after which the iron bridge on the site and waterway should be strengthened and widened to ensure free flow of water or else there is a threat of back water inundating the low-lying areas of Sathangadu.

Now, CMDA is eyeing the possibility of having it at Sadayankuppan in Tiruvallur district. Classified as ‘meikal poromboke’ (grassland), the 56.85 acres land has only 17 acres that is vacant. CMDA wants to club three acres to make it 20 acres for the project, sources said. The land is on Tiruottriyur-Ponneri Pancheti Road and has to be alienated in favour of CMDA. It is learnt that CMDA has requested the Collector for acquisition of the land.

CMDA seals three-star hotel for building violations at T Nagar

CHENNAI: A three-star hotel was sealed in the bustling T Nagar by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) for violating building rules on Friday. The planning permission was obtained for a residential building but was subsequently converted into a commercial establishment. Guests of the hotel, majority of them tourists from Malaysia, were shifted.

Sources in the CMDA said that the action was taken against Maaris Grand Hotel at Thirumalai Pillai Road after a court order.

"The building was functioning as a lodging facility without adequate setback area to operate as a commercial establishment. It should have a setback area of six metres on four sides of building, but the space is absent in one side of the building," a CMDA official said.

An official alleged that the building also has an additional floor exceeding the permitted three floors. The property owners went on an appeal before a court against a lock and seal notice but the order came in favour of the planning authority. "The hotel authorities had appealed to the government also seeking reprieve. Three months time was granted to carry out modifications," the official said. However, no action was taken by the hotel authorities.

Meanwhile, the guest in the hotel were shifted to other accommodations before the building was sealed. A police source, who was present during to the lock and seal procedure, said a majority of guest who were staying in the hotel were from Malaysia.
