Modern fish market to be opened soon

Fisheries Department has begun the process of selecting beneficiaries for allotting the stalls, says a government official

After years of delay due to procedural wrangles between the Fisheries Department and the Oulgaret Municipality, the Modern Hygienic Fish Market on the East Coast Road is likely to be opened soon.

The building had remained locked for over two years due to disputes over the allotment of stalls to vendors and the norms for selection of vendors.

The two-storey fully air-conditioned structure spread over 37,886 square feet was built by the Project Implementation Agency (PIA) with the World Bank assistance of Rs. 13.5 crore under the Tsunami Emergency Rehabilitation Project I. The complex was inaugurated by former chief minister N. Rangasamy on February 19, 2014.

According to a senior government official, “The Fisheries Department has begun the process of selecting the beneficiaries for allotment of stalls. The stalls will be demarcated by selecting vendors from all fishing panchayats and those who have already been affiliated to any of the fish markets managed by the municipalities and commune panchayats cannot claim rights. The market will be run by the Oulgaret municipality.”

The new complex was planned to cater to the needs of fishermen from several coastal villages in Puducherry. The complex has around 110 air-conditioned stalls, including 55 stalls on the ground floor, with cold storage facilities and separate areas for processing and cutting fish.

The other facilities in the complex include an effluent treatment plant, auction hall for fish, 10-tonne capacity ice plant and an ATM. The plant would treat effluents collected from the market and has been fitted with a 10-KV solar power plant to meet the requirements of the shopping area.

While cheap varieties of fish will be sold on the first floor, costly ones will be available in the second floor. Since the complex is big, fishermen from several coastal villages can sell their catch.

Excess fee collection at parking lot irks daily users

Double the fee collected for bicycles, two-wheelers

Excessive fee collection at the two-wheeler parking lot in Central Bus Stand has raised concern among users. The multi-level parking lot, owned by the Tiruchi Corporation, is being maintained and operated by a private contractor. It serves hundreds of commuters, office goers, students and traders of Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Karur.

The vehicle users park their two wheelers at the bus stand before boarding buses to their respective destinations. They would have to pay parking fee for every 24 hours to the contractor for parking the vehicles.

As per the board put up by the Tiruchi Corporation, Rs. 3 is charged for bicycles. It is Rs. 5 for two wheelers per day.

The 24-hour period starts from the time of parking. But, this is hardly followed by those employed by the contractor at the parking lot. They collect Rs. 10 for two-wheelers per day. As far as bicycles are concerned, the question does arise as the parking lot hardly receives bicycles.

In addition to it, against the rules and regulations stipulated by the Corporation, the staff manning the lot force the users to pay Rs. 10 more if they fail to remove their respective two wheelers before 12.30 a.m. To the surprise of many, the fee collectors issue receipt for collecting Rs. 10 a day.

“We pay double the amount that has been stated on the display board, hardly visible to many. No one can question them for collecting the excess fee. If we raise questions, we will be landing in trouble as they abuse us,” K. Karthick of Palakkarai, a regular user of the two-wheeler parking stand said.

V. Gowthaman of Karur, another regular user said that he had seen many altercations and fisticuffs between the fee collectors and two-wheeler owners for questioning about the excess charge being collected.

“The fee is exorbitant. We are forced to park our vehicles in the open. There is no safety for our vehicles too,” Mr. Karthick also charged.

S. Pushpavanam, secretary, Consumer Protection Council, Tamil Nadu, said that the issue could not be allowed to go unchecked. There should be a transparent system.

Ensure transparency

The Tiruchi Corporation should take necessary steps to ensure transparency. It should not hesitate to cancel the licence of the contractor if he failed to follow the rules.

Responding to the complaints, Special Officer-cum-Corporation Commissioner N.Ravichandran said he would depute a team of officials to look into the issue and take appropriate action.

Coimbatore corporation removes invasive species

COIMBATORE: The corporation of Coimbatore plans to remove invasive plant species from the tank bunds and reserve sites located in the city limits before the onset of Monsoon, this year. On Wednesday, the work began at a reserve site in Veerakeralam where invasive species were removed from a 40 cent park site.

"We have noticed that over the years, invasive species have taken over the tank bunds and have caused huge damage to the ecology. With the state facing a drought and the city staring at the same, we wanted to take up some steps to preserve the ecology of the region," said a town planning wing officer.

City corporation commissioner, K Vijayakarthikeyan said that they had already rolled out the plan. "We are currently enumerating the data on the number of such trees and bushes. After that we will begin the drive and use machinery to remove these species," he said.
