Drainage tops the list of demands of Ward 88 residents

As is the case with most wards in added areas in the Coimbatore Corporation, Ward 88 also lacks storm water drain and underground drainage system.

The Ward was formed by combining three wards of the then Kuniamuthur Municipality - Wards 17, 18 and 19. It extends from Sundakkamuthur Main Road in the north to Edayarpalayam in the south and from Sundakkamuthur in the west to Palakkad Main Road in the east.

The Ward has very few industries and most of the commercial activity takes place on Palakkad Main Road. Rice Mill Road, Pal Pannai Veethi, and Dal Factory Road are the old town areas and the newly developed layouts include Government Officers’ Colony, J.J. Nagar, M.S. Garden and a few more.

The residents said that most of the residential areas did not have storm water drainage and the entire Ward did not have underground drainage facility. With the number of people increasing, it was important that the Corporation provided the amenities at the earliest, said V. Shanmugam, a resident of Cholan Nagar.

The water supply situation had worsened in the recent past, thanks to the poor storage position in the Siruvani Reservoir, but their problem was that the Corporation’s supply was irregular. The residents were clueless about the water supply time; sometimes it would be around 2 a.m. or 3 a.m., complained M. Chitti Babu, a resident.

The other big problem - something that is common across other added areas - is the number of unapproved layouts where the Corporation cannot provide basic amenities such as street lights or drains.

Not only in the layouts, but in many other areas in the Ward, the street lighting is poor, complains E. Suresh, a resident of J.J. Nagar.

One of the big-ticket development projects that the residents want is a link road from Edayarpalayam to Sundakkamuthur Road so that residents of the area could easily reach Selvapuram by taking Kovaipudur Bypass Road.

Former Councillor of the Ward, Amutha Arulmozhi, said that she had taken up with the Corporation the need for the road and was pursuing it with help from the Municipal Administration Minister.

The other demands include an end to the illegal dumping of waste and debris along Sengulam Tank bund road and in new layouts.

Coimbatore Corporation and its partners implementing the model road project on D.B. Road and T.V. Swamy Street will engage the public for suggestions on February 18 and 19.

According to sources, the Corporation will place giant images of how the roads will look after the project is implemented and seek suggestions from the public from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Corporation Kalaiarangam.

The Corporation is implementing the model road project at Rs. 5.50 crore to develop 1.6 km of D.B. Road and 1.1 km of T.V. Swamy Street so that they have uniform motor carriage way, pedestrian-friendly pavements and ducts for cables.

On February 18, senior bureaucrats will brief the public on how the Corporation proposed to implement the project and the salient features of the model road. Thereafter, they will throw open the floor for suggestions from the public.

Representatives of the Corporation and the partner agencies - RAAC and ITDP - will note down the suggestions to incorporate them in the model road plan, the sources say and add that no major changes such as shifting bus shelters or stops can be considered, though.

The Corporation had recently held a joint inspection with TANGEDCO for taking underground the power cables and with telecom service providers for taking underground their cables.

Once the Corporation implemented the model road project, vehicle parking will be better regulated on the roads. Consequently, the number of vehicles parked on the road will come down. To address this problem, the Corporation is looking at alternative parking spaces in the vicinity. The sources say that the civic body is also in talks with restaurants and big commercial establishments on the two roads to make them look for alternative parking spaces.

The Corporation is implementing the model road project on Sanganoor Road, NSR Road, in Race Course and Masakalipalayam Road as well.

Plastic waste clogs city canals and open drains

Due to a floating population that visits the Central Bus Stand, a canal on Williams Road has become an eyesore

Though there is a ban on plastic carry bags in Tiruchi, open drainage, storm water and underground drainage canals continue to be clogged due to the indiscriminate dumping of plastic.

There is not a single canal that is free of plastics. Plastic materials particularly carry bags and plastic bottles clog the drains.

The problem is acute in the canals located in Cantonment.

Due to the floating population that visits the Central Bus Stand, a canal on Williams Road has become an eyesore due to this menace. The canal that starts from Bharathidasan Road and extends beyond Williams Road is full of plastic bags, plastic plates, bottles, footwear and food waste.

This due to a large number of roadside eateries, petty shops, commercial complexes, restaurants and hotels around the bus stand that attracts thousands of commuters daily.

Besides, a few Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) outlets are also functioning in the area.

Locals say that people of all walks of life including shoppers, customers and passengers recklessly dump waste in the canals.

They allege that due to the indiscriminate dumping of plastics not only do sewerage lines burst but also there is overflow of waste water on the roads.

“The sewage is clogged at several points because of waste particularly plastics. It has not been cleared for long,” says A. Mahalingam of Williams Road.

Several people, who visit the neighbouring Tasmac shops also threw empty bottles, he added.

Stating that same condition was prevailing in other areas, he said that the Corporation must carry out a comprehensive drainage cleaning drive so as to remove all garbage in the drainage and storm water canals.
