Corporation plans to strengthen important drainage channels

Three new blocks of residential quarters for sanitary workers planned

New drainage channel to be built along

Nelson Road in Srirangam

TIRUCHI: The Corporation has received an allocation of Rs.6.81 crore from the government under the Infrastructure Gap Filling Fund for 2009-10.

The civic body has planned to strengthen and fortify some of the important drainage channels in the city to prevent floods in the low-lying areas and also rebuild a few drainages along arterial roads. This apart, three new blocks of residential quarters for sanitary workers would be built utilising the funds.

The Corporation would spend about Rs.75 lakh for strengthening the Kollankulam channel, which serves as an important drain from the Kollankulam tank in Edamalaipattipudur. The overflow of the tank often results in the flooding of low-lying colonies in Edamalaipattipudur and Karumandapam areas.

The civic body has also set aside Rs.50 lakh each for taking up flood prevention works along the Kathan Vaical at Ammaiyappa Nagar and Thillai Nagar Rettai Vaical. Though both the channels were being desilted periodically, there have been persistent demands to put in place permanent repairs to ensure that the drains were able to carry the rainwater flow at times of monsoon. The Corporation would spend another Rs.50 lakh for flood prevention works in Jothi Nagar and Srinivasa Nagar in Ariyamangalam, two other flood-prone areas.

This apart, the Corporation would rebuild drainage channels along the East Boulevard Road, between the Gandhi Market and the Maharani Theatre at an estimated cost of Rs.70 lakh and from Bharathi Nagar to the level crossing on the same road, at an estimate of Rs.56 lakh. A new drainage channel would be built along the Nelson Road in Srirangam at a cost of Rs.25 lakh. The Corporation would spend two jet rodders at a cost of Rs.55 lakh for clearing blockades in the underground sewer system utilising the allocation, officials said.

Three blocks of residential quarters for sanitary workers, each with 12 units, would be built at a cost of Rs.66 lakh each at Poosari Street. About Rs.52 lakh would be spent for improving amenities at the sanitary workers quarters at the Poosari Street, which would include construction of a community centre and storm water drains.

COIMBATORE: Minister for Rural Industries Pongalur N. Palanisamy has called upon the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board here to complete the works on the Bhavani Combined Water Supply Scheme by February next year in order to help Kavundampalayam Municipality and Vadavalli Town Panchayat tide over scarcity of drinking water.

Reviewing the construction of water tanks in areas under the local bodies and the establishing of a water treatment plant at Chellappanur and an intake well at Nellithurai on Saturday, the Minister recalled that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the launch of the scheme here on February 24, 2007.

The Minister called upon the officials of the water board to speed up the works so that the people of the two local bodies were benefited by it before the onset of summer.

District Collector P. Umanath, TWAD Board Chief Engineer N. Ravichandran, Superintending Engineer P. Velusamy, Executive Engineer N.S. Manoharan, Kavundampalayam Municipality Chairman K.M. Sundaram and Vadavalli Town Panchayat President S. Amirthavalli Shanmughasundaram accompanied the Minister to the spots where the works were in progress.

The Minister said the scheme would provide the people under both the local bodies with a supply of 70 litres per capita per day. At present, the supply was 31 litres a day.

From the intake well at Nellithurai, water would be pumped to the treatment six km away at Chellapanur. Treated water would then go a main service reservoir located 14.40 km away at Veerapandi Pirivu. From there it would flow 15.55 km to a water tank at Kavundampalayam. From this tank, water would be supplied to seven new tanks and four existing ones at Kavundampalayam and to four at Vadavalli. Works were yet to be over with regard to two tanks each in the municipality and the town panchayat. The total length of pipes in the project would be 36 km.

Quoting the Minister, a press release from the district administration said the quick completion of the works would help in diverting the existing supply of Siruvani water to these areas to the city for the World Classical Tamil Conference in June next year.

CHENNAI: The renovated Marina Beach was formally declared open by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Sunday with the Chennai Corporation completing the Rs.25.92-crore beautification project.

“Apart from the beautification project, the Corporation has started initiatives to make the beach more tourist- friendly,” said Chennai Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni.

“Five reverse osmosis plants capable of providing 30,000 litres of drinking water an hour free of cost to visitors will be ready shortly,” he said.

The Corporation expects that the facilities will help more than 50,000 visitors to the beach a day, according to an official.

The proposal for beautification was made by Mr. Karunanidhi in the budget speech of 2007-2008.

The master plan was prepared in June 2007 and the work started in February 2008. The needs of various users and stakeholders were taken into consideration and architectural elements, such as plazas, gazeboes and pergolas, have been incorporated without affecting the nature and the beach environment, said Mr.Lakhoni.

The whole length of the beach from Triumph of Labour Statue to Light House has been divided into 14 harmonious landscaped galleries dotting its span of 3.1 km. A total of 428 octagonal poles with seagull-shaped light fittings and additional high-mast lamps have been erected.

New bus shelters

Ten modern stainless steel bus shelters have been erected near the beach.

Mr.Karunanidhi planted saplings as part of the inauguration of the beautified beach.

Deputy Chief Minister M.K.Stalin and Mayor M.Subramanian participated.
