Rs. 1.90 crore sanctioned to conduct feasibility study on water project

Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI: The Corporation, which has started working on two major drinking water schemes, may be blessed with another mega project to bring drinking water directly from Papanasam dam to Tirunelveli in the near future. The State Government has sanctioned Rs. 1.90 crore to conduct a feasibility study on the Rs.100-crore project.

After the peripheral areas of Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai witnessed rapid development, it was decided to execute two drinking water projects for wards 19, 26 and 27 and for wards 8, 9 and 10 on a total outlay of Rs. 22.22 crore, for which Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin laid foundation stone during his recent visit. Subsequently, construction on overhead tanks for the two projects started a couple of weeks ago as it has been decided to complete them in a year.

Even as the corporation is relying on infiltration wells in Tamiraparani river to meet the drinking water needs, illegal sand mining near these water sources badly affects the quality as well as quantity of water being supplied to overhead tanks constructed at various points in the town. Consequently, residents, irked by the poor and erratic supply of drinking water, are flooding the corporation offices with petitions and empty pots. To put a permanent end to the ever-growing need for drinking water, the corporation forwarded the proposal to the State Government for bringing water from Papanasam dam. The State Government released Rs. 1.90 crore for preparing a detailed project report by appointing a qualified consultant.

“Since we expect a spurt in the growth of population, we proposed the project and gave a PowerPoint presentation in the presence of Chief Secretary, Finance Secretary and top officials from various departments. Subsequently, the government released Rs. 1.90 crore for appointing a consultant, who will prepare a detailed project report within nine months after examining the feasibility,” said Mayor A.L. Subramanian.

Staff Reporter

‘It willl help the city to have planned growth’

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Consumer Cause has appealed to the Government to expedite formation of a Planning and Development Authority for Coimbatore.

Secretary of the consumer body K. Kathirmathiyon has said in a release: “We are happy to note that the Government is seriously considering the formation of the authority for Coimbatore, which was the request of the citizens of this area.”

Contribution

Development and construction activities here were next only to Chennai in the State. Coimbatore’s contribution to the Infrastructure Development Fund of the State Government was nearly 36 per cent.

Formation of the authority would enable the city to have a planned and healthy growth. Currently, Coimbatore had a number of unplanned, unsafe and unhealthy growth and there were delays in getting approvals.

Secretary of the Housing and Urban Development Department said recently that applications submitted in standardised format would be decided in 30 days by the Local Planning Authorities and in the case of queries, it would be done in three days.

Though this was a welcome move, formation of the authority would be the long-term solution for the development of this area, he said.

CHENNAI: The Ambattur Municipality proposes to introduce ban on use of plastic bags that are less than 20 microns thick in the area soon.

A resolution was approved by the council recently. The local body plans to sensitise people about environmental hazards and use of alternative materials such as paper bags. Members of women’s self-help groups would also be trained in making paper bags.

While a fee is proposed to be collected from owners of marriage halls to collect additional garbage, penalty would be levied on shopkeepers who sell plastic bags of low thickness. However, these measures would be implemented in February after public discussion. The municipality also plans to procure 45 iron bins.

Municipal Commissioner Ashish Kumar said all health posts, bill collection centres and municipal office would be enabled with CCTV facility to monitor the activities in two months. Moreover, electronic digital boards would also be installed in municipal office, health posts and Ambattur OT bus stand at an estimated cost of Rs.3 lakh to provide information such as contact numbers of municipality officials and services.

However, resolutions pertaining to collection of fee from mobile operators for installing mobile phone towers and rates for sewage disposal were dropped following objections from councillors.

Some of the other resolutions approved by the council include purchase of 17 hand-held billing machines for property tax collection and construction of Rs.24 lakh worth stormwater drain from Vallayapathi Street, Mogappair to Padi Kuppam Road covering a distance of one km.
