Corporation decides to expand parking lot at central bus stand

The Tiruchirapalli City Corporation has decided to expand the two-wheeler parking lot at the central bus stand at a cost of Rs. 64 lakh.

It is aimed at avoiding two-wheeler parking in open places near the existing two-wheeler stand.

A resolution to that effect was adopted at an urgent meeting of the council held here on Friday. It said the existing stand was insufficient to cater to the large number of vehicles.

Vehicles parked outside the stand on open places had become a hindrance for the free movement of buses, cars, and others in the bus stand areas. Moreover, there was a need to take into consideration future requirement.

The proposed expansion plan would reduce the traffic congestion to an extent. The council approved a proposal to introduce “pay and park” system on some arterial roads in the city.

It will soon be implemented on the Thillai Nagar Main Road, Shastry Road, Fort Station Road, E.V.R. Road-Vayalur Road near Puthur.

It would levy a fee of Rs. 3 for two-wheelers: Rs. 5 for four-wheelers such as cars and vans and Rs. 10 for buses. The rates would be applicable for a six-hour period.

When a few members drew the attention of officials on developing new parks, A. Jaya, Mayor, and V.P. Thandapani, Commissioner, said it had been planned to establish15 more parks in different parts of city. All basic facilities would be established on them.

Councillors from both the AIADMK and the DMK complained over stray dog menace  in different parts of the city.

The number of patients approaching doctors for treatment of dog bites was on the rise.

Intervening in the debate, Mr. Thandapani said surgical sterilization (birth control) was being done for 1,000 street-dogs every year to bring down their population.

The authorities could not carry out illegal methods to control the dog menace. They had to be released where they were caught or trapped. However, special drive would be carried out shortly for surgical sterilization of street dogs.

To the demand of many members, Ms. Jaya said that fogging operation would be immediately carried out in all areas to control mosquito menace. Similarly, the roads, which were damaged in the recent rain, would be re-laid in the city shortly.

Sewerage work may end by March

Traffic diversions have been put in place for the scheme

Work on the underground sewerage in Vellore Corporation is expected to be completed by March 2015.

Traffic diversions have been put in place to pave way for the implementation of the scheme that will address the civic need of several Vellore residents.

Officials said the Rs. 40.49 crore-project is being implemented in four packages. While package I and II comprises work for establishing the collection system such as pipelines for 52 kilometres, pumping station and lift station, package III covers construction of the 10.280 mld capacity sewage treatment plant near Muthumandapam, according to officials.

Work commences

Work under the three packages commenced during 2010.

“So far, 85 per cent works have been completed in package I and II, while we have completed 98 per cent works at the sewage treatment plant,” an official said.

Establishing the disposal point comes under package IV, which commenced during January 2013. This involves establishing the sewage treatment pipeline for five kms from Muthumandapam to Velavadi Eri in Alamelumangapuram.

The treated sewage will be used for irrigation purposes, officials added. Here too, about 98 per cent works have been completed.

National Highway

For taking up the scheme work on 3.664 km of the National Highway 234, the Corporation has divided it into four segments/reaches – National Theatre to Makkan junction (near North police station), North police station to Arya Bhavan, Arya Bhavan to SP bungalow, SP bungalow to Arni Road near Velappadi bridge.

“Work from Makkan junction to fish market has been completed. Work from fish market to South Police Station will begin on Friday,” he added. The Corporation is looking at completing the work on the NH by March 31, 2015. The Vellore Corporation comprises 60 wards. However, the project covers 24 out of the 48 wards of the erstwhile Vellore municipality, officials said.

“A detailed project report is being prepared for implementing the scheme in the remaining 24 wards and areas such as Thorapadi, Sathuvachari, Dharapadavedu, Shenbakkam, Allapuram, Chiteri and Periyallapuram. We are engaging a private consultant for the DPR,” an official said.
