Rs 100-cr facelift for Chennai Central Station

CHENNAI: Southern Railway will soon finalise a consultant for carrying out the project of making Chennai Central a world-class railway station.

This was decided at a high-level meeting here on Wednesday of officials from Southern Railway, Chennai Corporation, Chennai Metro Rail Corporation and other government agencies.

A senior railway official told Express, “The tenders have already been floated. Once the consultant is finalised, the master plan will be drafted and then the actual work will begin.”

Terming Wednesday’s discussions as primary, the official said it would help avoid duplication of work and also ensure that all interested parties complemented each other. “The main aim was to ensure proper coordination of all agencies involved in the project,” he added.

Chennai Central is among the three stations in Southern Railway that will get world-class facilities in terms of infrastructure, passenger amenities and security in another five years. It is also learnt that the railway ministry has sanctioned Rs 100 crore to each of these stations.

The official also said the projects would involve a string of passenger amenities of international standards — with provisions for escalators, elevators and walkalators, besides a host of facilities for arrival and departure of passengers.

Above all, multi-level platforms would be created for the arrival and departure of express and suburban services from the same complex. The security system would be upgraded with a strong CCTV network. A multi-level parking area would also be in place, apart from more subways and road over bridges. A link with Chennai Metro Rail would also be established.

Coin-operated urinals soon

November 19th, 2009

Chennai, Nov. 18: Top civic officials from Chennai Corporation will visit Delhi, next week, to study the feasibility of introducing automatic coin operated urinals in the city. These eco-friendly urinals, which use less water, are already a hit in the national capital. This low maintenance facility, if approved by the corporation council, will be placed in busy areas like markets and shopping complexes according to corporation commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni.

Preliminary enquiries have revealed that coin-operated toilets are easy to maintain and the input costs are also low. These urinals helped the Delhi corporation effectively curb the stench emanating from public toilets. The civic team led by chief engineer along with an executive engineer will examine the cost factor and benefits of introducing a similar facility in the city. However, Mr Lakhoni admitted that the proposal is still in its preliminary stage.

According to corporation sources, there is a shortage of urinals in Chennai. The city has only 750 toilets, 498 of which function as pay and use facilities. The corporation had also proposed to construct new toilets along the Marina beach as part of its beach beautification project. It may be noted that the corporation’s earlier proposal of constructing high-end toilets and footpaths with escalators on design-build-operate-transfer basis has hit a speed breaker. The civic body initially planned to hand over these structures to private firms so that the company could generate revenue through advertisement rights. However, these plans were put on hold as the state government banned hoardings and large posters.
