IN ACTION: M.K. Alagiri, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers, visiting a rain-affected area in Madurai on Wednesday.

MADURAI: Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers M.K. Alagiri inspected a few pockets in the city, which were affected by rains and pulled up the Corporation authorities for not carrying out rehabilitation work on a war-footing.

The road leading to a ration shop in Ward No. 34 was non-motorable and filled with slush.

During a brief interaction, some local residents claimed non-availability of essential items in the ration shop in their area to the Minister.

Similarly, they also complained about the delay in repairing roads.

Some others claimed that Corporation officials were not present to help them to move to safer places when rainwater inundated low-lying areas. Mr. Alagiri pulled up Mayor G. Thenmozhi and Corporation officials for their inaction and set an ultimatum to carry out the task.

“I will visit the place in a day or two… You should have done your work to the satisfaction of the public (by then).”

He also enquired with some of the party functionaries near the Vaigai river causeway, where a third year engineering college student M. Danasekaran of K. Pudur was washed away on Tuesday midnight, when he was going with his classmate on a two-wheeler. Fire and Rescue Service Department personnel are searching for the victim.

Many women residents near Obulapadithurai area complained to the officials that snakes – big and small – were spotted from the pipes laid underneath the Vaigai river since Tuesday night following water flow in the river.

Traffic along the causeways connecting northern and southern parts of the city on the Vaigai river was blocked for two-wheelers since Wednesday morning.

Even pedestrians were not permitted to cross the causeways.

District Revenue Officer Dinesh Oliver Ponraj and former MLA K. Thalapathi were among those who were present during the Minister’s inspection.

Cleanliness drive starts in Mohali

MOHALI: The Mohali district administration on Wednesday launched a massive cleaning drive in the city that would continue till November 19. The initiative has been taken to ensure beautification of the city, which is considered the gateway to Punjab.

On Wednesday, the drive was launched in Phase-VI, Phase-V, phase-IIIA and Phase-IX. Leaders from both Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), including local MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu and MC president Rajinder Singh Rana, joined the drive.

Deputy commissioner Prabhjot Singh Mand said that cooperation of political leaders, social welfare organizations and residential welfare associations had been sought for the success of the drive. He said that residents should ensure that garbage collected from houses is dumped only in garbage bins and not littered around. “The drive would continue till November 19 and after that it would be the collective responsibility of the administration, municipal council and residents to keep their surroundings clean,” he said.

Various resident welfare associations have lauded the efforts of the district administration and deputy commissioner PS Mand. They said that the drive would give the city a cleaner look. MC president Rajinder Singh Rana said the civic body would continue the good work and ensure proper coordination.

The entire city has been divided into four zones and each zone is being monitored by a supervisor. While regular cleaning would be done by MC 8 am to 10 am, the special cleaning drive would be launched from 2pm to 5pm.

Enough in reservoirs to last till next monsoon: Metrowater officials

CHENNAI: The level in the Veeranam lake in Cuddalore is up to the brim following the heavy inflow but Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) officials say it does not mean any increase in the supply to the city. They, however, say the four reservoirs have enough to last till the next monsoon.

On Tuesday, the level in the Veeranam lake was at 43.7 feet against its capacity of 47.5 feet. The inflow was 1,000 cusecs while the outflow maintained at 1,474 cusecs. On Wednesday, the inflow was 500 cusecs and the outflow 493 cusecs.

CMWSSB officials say only 180 Million litres per Day (MLD) is drawn from the lake for the city's needs. "Veeranam is primarily a irrigation lake from which we are drawing water for the city under a scheme. Of the out flow of 493 cusecs from Veeranam on Wednesday, 427 cusecs will go for agricultural use and 66 cusecs for Chennai," said an official.

Water from Veeranam reaches a pumping house in Settiya Thoppu near Cuddalore and goes to a treatment plant in Vadakuthu near Neyvelli. From there it reaches an overhead tank in Kadambuliyur and then, using gravity, 180 MLD is sent to the Porur headworks. "This then provides water to entire South Chennai," said the official.

Officials say the level in the four reservoirs supplying water to the city increased by 45% on Wednesday compared to Tuesday. On Tuesday, the combined storage was 4880 mcft against the capacity of 11,057 mcft. On Wednesday, it was 5039 mcft an increase of 159 mcft.

"The increase is mainly due to the rains. The average rainfall in Red Hills, Cholavaram, and Poondi is 325 mm for November. We have been receiving 2.3 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) of Krishna water. This is expected to continue untill our reservoirs become full and we ask them to stop. This will ensure enough supply till the next monsoon," said the official.
