Two plants to be set up to produce biogas from waste

BARC to offer assistance to Corporation

The Tuticorin Corporation will install two plants to produce biogas from municipal waste, with assistance from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).

The City Health Officer, Pradeep V. Krishnakumar, told The Hindu on Thursday that two locations had been identified for the purpose and the BARC would establish solid waste management plants in these places as a permanent solution to the problem of municipal waste choking drainage channels. The plants will be of one and two-tonne capacity respectively. About 190 tonnes of municipal waste, constituting 55 per cent biodegradable waste and 45 per cent non-degradable waste, would be collected every day and fed into these plants to produce biogas, he said.

In the absence of a solid waste management system, drains get choked at several places in Tuticorin. The open drain at Muniyasamypuram is a cause for concern. The stench emanating from it is unbearable and residents call it a ‘visual blight.’

The drainage had become an excellent breeding ground for mosquitoes, said K. Ramasamy, a resident.

Stagnation of sewage is a long-standing problem but no permanent solution is in sight. Besides insanitation, the breeding of mosquitoes is a health issue.

Sanitation workers on contract complained that waste from cow sheds in and around Levenchipuram was being dumped into the channel, causing it to choke. Dr. Krishnakumar pointed out that the drain was cleared at regular intervals and notices had been served thrice on persons for letting waste from cow sheds into it.

Mass cleaning drive for 3 days

To be taken up across district to prevent mosquito breeding

A mass cleaning drive will be organised for three days, starting on Monday, in all areas right from the Corporation to village panchayat in order to prevent breeding of mosquitoes, according to Collector Jayashree Muralidharan.

It is aimed at removing articles such as tyre, plastic cups, disposed flower pots and stone grinders, coconut and egg shells, which are identified as sources of breeding of aedes aegypti - dengue spreading mosquitoes. The waste strewn on the streets will also be removed, she added.

Presiding over a meeting here on Thursday to take stock of the disease prevention measures in view of the ensuing northeast monsoon within two weeks, Ms. Muralidharan said that the officials of District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), panchayat unions, corporation, town panchayats and village panchayats should take sincere steps to carry out the drive from October 13 to October 16 in their respective areas.

The over head tanks and water storing units should also be cleaned to ensure the supply clean water to the citizens.

She added that the government officials, employees and the residents of the respective areas should be involved in the drive. They should also be sensitised about the breeding of mosquitoes, causing dengue, “chikun guniya” and other diseases.

In a related move, V.P. Thandapani, Commissioner, Tiruchirappalli City Corporation, has asked the educational institutions, both government and private to clean their campuses. They should intimate the Corporation if students were affected with fever.

The managements should create awareness among students on dengue fever. Oath should be administered in prayers on prevention of dengue fever.

Corporation begins cleaning city roads

Works taken up after complaints by road users

The Coimbatore Corporation has begun cleaning roads for the benefit of motorists ahead of the monsoon.

On Wednesday morning, following instructions from Mayor P. Rajkumar, the civic body workers started cleaning Sathyamangalam Road, Nanjappa Road, Mettupalayam Road, Palakkad Road and Avanashi Road.

Mr. Rajkumar said that he has asked the officials to clean the slush on roadsides and sand that had gathered on the foot of the medians and barricades.

This was after complaints from road users that the wet sand and slush made driving difficult and dry sand dust was causing trouble to two-wheeler riders.

Based on the complaints, he had instructed the officials concerned to pool in workers in the nearby wards to clean the roads – the Sathyamangalam Road was cleaned near the Textool Bridge, the Nanjappa Road near the bus stands, the Mettupalayam Road near Chinthamani Junction, the Palakkad Road near the police station there and the Avanashi Road near Dhandumariamman Temple. The officials also cleaned the North Coimbatore flyover.

Mr. Rajkumar said that in the coming days, the conservancy workers would continue to clean the aforementioned roads and also other busy roads in the city.

The removal of sand was not only to help the road users but also ensure easy discharge of rainwater into drains.

As part of the monsoon-preparedness initiative, the Mayor had also asked officials in all the five zones to prepare a list of roads that needed to be repaired.

The instruction was given two days ago and officials were on the job of preparing the list.

Mr. Rajkumar said that the Corporation would do the work even if the rains continued.

Once the rains stopped, the civic body would take up repairing the damaged roads.
