Chennai

Sept. 25: In a bid to prevent flooding in Chennai during the ensuing northeast monsoon, the city corporation on Friday convened a high level meeting comprising officials from 33 government departments at the Ripon Buildings to assess the monsoon preparatory works and natural disaster management.

According to a corporation official, the objective of the meeting was to form a coordination committee among the city corporation and other government officials to execute the monsoon plan. Issues like storm water drains, road repair, desilting of canals, clearing of encroachments and rescue and relief operations during floods were discussed.

Mayor M. Subramanian, who chaired the meeting requested fisheries and agriculture departments to provide boats and high power motors pumps in case of inundation. He also announced that the civic body had decided not to encourage any road cuts for the next three months. From October 1, neither the government nor private agencies would be allowed to dig roads.

Corporation commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni enquired about the monsoon arrangements made by the Public Works Department, Chennai Metro water and Slum Clearance Board. In fact, corporation councillors and zonal chairmen cornered the representatives from these departments, when they failed to provide proper details in connection with the monsoon preparatory works.

Mr Subramanian concluded the meeting requesting the departments to work together to prevent floods.

Over 3,000 tonnes of garbage likely to be cleared away

People asked to use collection bins to discard waste

SALEM: Salem Corporation has made special arrangements to remove garbage generated during the Ayudha Pooja and Saraswathi Pooja celebrations.

Corporation Commissioner K.S. Palanisamy said that sanitary personnel had been asked to work during night hours and more vehicles would be deployed to transport the garbage quickly.

Earthmovers would be deployed in the dump yards to unload the garbage from the vehicles.

Workers

Workers would be sent to all the parts of the city to remove garbage.

The city, which normally generates over 300 tonnes of garbage every day, was expected to generate over 3,000 tonnes during the celebrations.

The Commissioner asked the people not to throw waste materials on the streets and roads, but to use the garbage collection bins instead.

Throwing of garbage on the roads would cause inconvenience to the vehicle users and affect traffic safety.

Dumping of garbage on the streets would also make it difficult for the civic workers to clean the areas.

People should handover the garbage to the collection vehicles or use the bins, he said. The civic body cautioned that stern action would be initiated against shopkeepers if they were found disposing of garbage on the roadside and streets.

People should also avoid dumping solid waste into the drainage channels.

Mr. Palanisamy had appealed to the people in the city to co-operate with the civic administration in keeping the city clean.

Mayor addresses meeting on monsoon preparedness

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation will not permit road cuts, including by government departments, from October 1 to January, according to Mayor M. Subramanian.

Addressing a coordination meeting on monsoon preparedness on Friday, he said even small road cuts could lead to accidents during rain. “We need about a week for road repairs and therefore October 1 is the cut off date,” he said. Already around 220 km of roads in the city have been cut.

Mr. Subramanian urged the Metrowater to raise the height of manholes on concrete roads, to increase the quantity of chlorine in drinking water and make sewage pumping stations function round the clock during monsoon. Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni urged the Fisheries and Agriculture and Fire and Rescue Services Departments to arrange adequate motors for pumping out water and boats to rescue stranded persons. The Metrowater was urged to ensure proper functioning of its sewage pumping stations in critical areas. The Mayor told the TNEB to form special squads to ensure that there are no electric shocks in spots where water stagnates. He directed the Highways Department to desilt its stormwater drains on Anna Salai and Poonamallee High Road and complete stormwater drain work on Jawaharlal Nehru Road.

Mr. Subramanian asked the Revenue Department officials to help remove obstructions on the Adyar at Keerai Thottam in Saidapet and at three spots on Virugambakkam Canal. The MRTS was asked to desilt blocks on Buckingham Canal beneath its service road. The Southern Railway has been directed to desilt Ainsley Canal and ICF Canal.
