Steady inflow likely after a day, says official

Water will travel 25 km from inter-State border

to reach Poondi reservoir

Four city reservoirs can store nearly

9,000 mcft of water

CHENNAI: Water from the Kandaleru reservoir in Andhra Pradesh reached Uthukottai, the inter-State border of Kandaleru-Poondi canal on Friday.

An official of Water Resources Department said that about 1,500 cubic feet per second (cusecs) of water is being released from the reservoir upstream since Tuesday. Water travelled nearly 152 km and reached Uthukottai around 6.30 p.m. on Friday. The initial flow was marginal and it would take a day to receive steady inflow.

From the inter-State border, water would travel a distance of 25 km to reach Poondi reservoir, a major storage point, on Saturday. With the repair work carried out recently on the canal, maximum realisation is expected. One cusec of water is equal to 28.3 litres .

The four city reservoirs have space to store nearly 9,000 million cubic feet (tmcft) of water. Of this, Poondi reservoir can take in three tmcft of water, said an official.

Chennai Metrowater officials said that the release of water from Kandaleru would help in improving the water supply in the city.

The extraction of groundwater would be reduced according to the water realised in the Poondi reservoir. At present, Chennai is being supplied about 640-650 million litres of water a day.

As per the agreement between the two States, Chennai must be provided with the water till November, the officials added.

Says this is essential to ease traffic congestion near the New Town Railway Gate area

Construction of an overbridge at Pudur Railway Gate will begin as scheduled

Construction of bridge across Palar connecting Devasthanam and Periapettai long pending

VANIYAMBADI: Vaniyambadi Municipality in Vellore District passed a resolution requesting the State government to impress upon the Railways to start work on the proposed construction of a subway near the New Town Railway Gate area here on Friday.

Resolution passed

The resolution for construction of a subway at the New Town Railway Gate area was passed at the Council meeting held at the Vaniyambadi Municipality on Friday.

Over 100 resolutions relating to various other development works was also passed.

Vaniyambadi Municipality Chairman V. Sivaji Ganesan addressing the Councillors said that the Railway Board had revoked its earlier recommendation for construction of a subway at New Town Railway Gate area.

However, he on earlier occasion had requested the State government to impress upon the Railways to go ahead with the proposal for construction of the subway.

The subway would help to ease traffic congestion. The State government had directed the Municipality to pass a resolution for want of the subway.

He said that construction of an overbridge at Pudur Railway Gate would begin as scheduled.

The overbridge at Pudur Railway Gate area was sanctioned by the former Minister of State for Railways R. Velu on repeated request put forth by the residents and rail users of Vaniyambadi.

Foundation stone

The foundation stone for the overbridge would be laid in three months time.

Further, the Councillors pointed out to the Municipality Chairman the urgent need to solve the drinking water problem in Vaniyambadi town.

Accepting the demand put forth by the Councillors, Mr. Sivaji Ganesan said that there was a need to construct two check dams across the Palar to solve the drinking water crisis at Vaniyambadi town. Based on this the Municipality passed a resolution recommending construction of a check dam across the Palar connecting Vadakupattu with Ramanaickenpettai.

Similarly, the Municipality would recommend construction of another check dam across the Palar connecting Periapettai with Ramanaickenpettai.

Mr. Sivaji Ganesan said that it had been a long pending demand put forth by the residents belonging to ten panchayats for construction of a bridge across the Palar connecting Devasthanam and Periapettai. The demand for the bridge had been pending for more than two decades.

In fact, the residents belonging to the ten panchayats had even decided to boycott the Assembly and Parliamentary elections, as their demand was not being fulfilled.

However, the decision to boycott the elections was given up based on assurance from authorities concerned including the Law Minister Durai Murugan.

Need for construction of bridge

He said that the Municipality would sternly emphasise the need for construction of the bridge connecting Devasthanam and Periapettai.

The bridge was urgently required as people belonging to the ten panchayats were stranded during the monsoon. Their access to the Vaniyambadi town was cut for a couple of months till the water on the Palar dried.

Even students had no mode of transport to go to schools. Children’s education was affected.

The Chairman after getting the consent of the Councillors brought in a resolution demanding the State government to immediately fulfill the demand for construction of a bridge connecting Devasthanam and Periapettai.

GH does first heart transplant in govt sector

CHENNAI: The 175-year-old Government General Hospital on Thursday did its first heart transplant on a 20-year-old woman with the donation that came from the parents of 17-year-old brain dead boy from Salem who sustained severe head injuries in a road traffic accident. The heart transplant team was headed by chief cardiac surgeon Dr Viswakumar.

With three hospitals in the city Frontier LifeLine, Apollo Hospitals and Government General Hospital -- holding valid heart transplant licenses, the city has done nearly a dozen heart transplants in the last one year. Having done more than 20 heart transplants, the highest number by any city in the country, Chennai also has a high success rate, with 70% of the recipients living for more than a year after the transplant.

The teenaged boy from Salem was admitted to Global Hospitals in Chennai and declared brain early this morning. When his parents signed the forms for organ donation, the hospital called the state's central organ transplant network co-ordinator Dr J Amalorpavanathan.

A team of doctors from GH retrieved the heart. While the liver and a kidney were retained by Global Hospitals, the other kidney was given to Sri Ramachandra University and the eyes went to the Government Ophthalmic Hospital in Egmore. "This boy has given life to at least four others and vision to two people," said Dr Amalorpavanathan.

City police commissioner T Rajendran was also informed and police almost instantly turned on the "green corridor" for speedy transport of the harvested organs. The heart reached the GH in 45 minutes. By then, the 20-year-old girl who was suffering from a chronic heart disease was prepared for the surgery. The girl, according Dr Viswakumar, had a dilated heart. "She had severe breathlessness and could not even walk a few steps. She has been suffering for the last one year. We are happy that we could help her," he said.

The patient's condition was stable but doctors say they would know about the success of the transplant only after a few days. "We have put her in an isolated room. She will be on immunosuppressants. We hope she takes the transplant well," said GH dean Dr J Mohanasundaram.
