Commissioners of Tirunelveli, Tuticorin administer oath to Bhuvaneshwari and Antony Grace

E. Bhuvaneshwari, who was elected unopposed as the fifth Mayor of Tirunelveli Corporation, assumed office here on Wednesday. Commissioner R. Lakshmi administered the oath to Ms. Bhuvaneshwari in the presence of Collector M. Karunakaran, MPs S. Muthukaruppan, Vijila Sathyananth, K.R.P. Prabhakaran, Deputy Mayor P. Jeganathan alias Ganesan, Tamil Nadu Housing Board chairman R. Murugaiah Pandian, former Mayor A. Jayarani, councillors and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) office-bearers at the Corporation Council Hall.

Standing with folded hands for a couple of minutes in front of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s portrait hanging behind the Mayor’s chair in the hall, Ms. Bhuvaneshwari paid her respects before putting her first signature in the papers.

After Ms. Vijila was nominated as AIADMK’s Rajya Sabha member, the mayor post fell vacant in January. Though it was expected that the by-election to fill the post would be a cakewalk for the ruling party which had just registered its thumping victory in the Lok Sabha polls in May, Ms. Bhuvaneshwari was elected unopposed since Bharatiya Janata Party candidate G.P.R. Vellaiyammal withdrew her nomination, much to the shock of her party colleagues and joined the AIADMK in the presence of party supremo Jayalalithaa.

Tuticorin

In Tuticorin, Corporation Commissioner S. Madhumathi administered mayoral oath to A.P.R. Antony Grace and handed over the ceremonial sceptre to her in the presence of MP Sasikala Pushpa, MLAs S.T. Chellapandian, ‘Kadambur’ Raju and Deputy Mayor P. Xavier.

Civic body goes on a tax collection drive

The Tiruchirapalli City Corporation has launched an intensive tax collection drive to mop up property and other tax dues from city residents.

The drive will continue till the end of this month, Corporation Commissioner V.P. Thandapani has said. Under the Tiruchirapalli Corporation Act, the residents have to pay their property tax dues within 15 days from the commencement of a half year and water charge every three months, he said in a release.

Taxes can be remitted at the corporation service centres at the K. Abishekapuram, Srirangam, Golden Rock, and Ariyamangalam zonal offices or at the computerised collection centres in the city.

All the service and tax collection centres of the corporation will function from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

Mr. Thandapani appealed to the residents to pay their property, vacant site, and professional tax dues and the water and underground drainage charges before September 30 and avoid penal action.

The Tiruchirapalli City Corporation has planned to send notices to the street vendors on N.S.B. Road and around Theppakulam asking them to move to the designated sites on Old Goodshed Road.

The move is not only to decongest N.S.B Road, one of the busiest roads in the city, but also to provide suitable sites to them.

V.P.Thandapani, Commissioner, Tiruchirapalli City Corporation, told The Hindu on Tuesday that it had been identified that there were about 35 pavement shops along the N.S.B. Road and Theppakulam.

Steps had been taken to serve notices to them to move them to the allotted place. Necessary infrastructure for accommodating the shops was being constructed on Old Goodshed Road.

They would be given 45 to 60 days to move to the new location.

Answering a question, the Commissioner said that their business would not be affected as the new location also has considerable local and floating population. Moreover, they would get sufficient space to display their materials.

Though many civic bodies were yet to act on the national policy to regulate street vendors, the Tiruchirappali Corporation had taken a proactive step to make them an integral part of the urban retail trade.

It was a good opportunity for the hawkers to find their place in the allotted site.

It had been identified that 80 zones were concentrated with roadside vendors in the city.

Steps would be taken to regulate them gradually. Moreover, a comprehensive survey on street vendors was also under way.

It would come out with all details including economic background of hawkers. The list would be sent to the State and Central governments for follow up action, Mr.Thandapani added.
