Modernised facility can accommodate 47 wholesale sellers and 2,000 retail sellers

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday inaugurated a modernised Corporation wholesale fish market and a bridge across Noyyal here through video conference from Chennai.

According to a press release, the Corporation was earlier operating a wholesale fish market spread across 1.71 acres at Ukkadam.

However, the market lacked adequate facilities and posed difficulties to the public and the retail sellers. Following this, the Corporation drew up plans to modernise the facility at a cost of Rs. 3.24 crore.

The National Fisheries Development Board allotted Rs.2.25 crore through the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Development Corporation with the Coimbatore Corporation contributing the remaining Rs. 99 lakh.

Now, the modernised fish market can accommodate 47 wholesale sellers and 2,000 retail sellers. It was spread across 22,200 sq.ft.

It was also paved with concrete roads and had an ATM centre besides a canteen, vehicle parking lots, toilets, a place for processing the fish, drainage, light poles and borewell.

It was expected to benefit more than one lakh persons who can now purchase fish in hygienic conditions.

The State Government had also allocated Rs.15 crore to widen the bypass road of 9.70 km from the Ukkadam Perur Road Junction to Kovaipudur and for the construction of a high level bridge across Noyyal to reduce congestion on this stretch of road.

The congestion was due to the fact that this bypass road was the only means for all commuters, buses and trucks plying from Coimbatore along the Ukkadam – Athupallam Road to Kerala.

The bridge construction and the road widening were expected to reduce congestion on this road and benefit the residents of areas such as Kuniamuthur, Kovaipudur, Sundakamuthur, Kulathupalayam, Ukkadam, Big Bazaar Street and Selvapuram.

Corporation to recover 541 plots of leased land

Chennai Corporation is all set to retrieve land leased out for the purpose of ‘education, commerce, residence and charity’ in various parts of the city.

Over 825 grounds of Corporation land is under illegal possession after expiry of lease period for 541 pieces of property.

Notices

The civic body will issue notice to all individuals and private associations that occupy and use such land in the old city limits.

The land is usually leased for a maximum period of three years at cheap rates and after the lease period is over, the Corporation takes a call on renewing the lease. However, many lessees have not paid even the low rates demanded of them.

Some of the immovable properties of the Corporation have also been leased out following the request of other government departments, undertakings, corporations and boards.

A number of private associations and individuals started using Corporation land on lease basis as per provisions of section 75 of CCMC Act 1919, prior to 1976. The lease period of all the cases has expired.

The civic body initiated action a few years ago but even the relevant files could not be located.

Some of the individuals or private associations have filed cases in various courts.

Missing records

Initiatives have also been taken to defend the cases. According to Corporation sources, Rs. 98 crore worth of arrears of lease rent is pending. After expiry, the lands continue to be in possession of the original lessee or legal heirs or other persons.

Records pertaining to such lands have also gone missing.

The civic body is set to complete a study of such lands shortly.

The initiative to retrieve the lands will be taken based on the study.

Metrowater to sell treated waste water for construction

Metrowater to sell treated waste water for construction

In these days, when freshwater resources are becoming scarce, Chennai Metrowater has come up with the idea of supplying treated waste water to the construction industry.

The industry needs close to 20 lakh litres of water daily for various construction activities. Of this, nearly 6 lakh litres are estimated to be required for major construction sites along the IT corridor. In a bid to ease the burden on groundwater, Metrowater has proposed to build another treatment plant to once again treat the water from the treatment plant in Perungudi.

The water agency is already supplying about 30 million litres a day of recycled water to industries, the Chennai Corporation, and the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company. The Rs. 56.6-lakh plant will treat six lakh litres per day, which will be provided to the industry.

Though the treated waste water is good enough to be used directly, the water agency will treat it again to ensure quality production of concrete and safe handling.

With Metrowater planning to complete the construction of the additional plant in November, the recycled water will be available for Rs. 20 per kilo litre. Besides saving freshwater sources, the project also aims at meeting the expenditure towards treating sewage. Construction contractors may register themselves to get the service, the release said.
