Chamber’s appeal to Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin

RAJAPALAYAM: The Rajapalayam Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to find a solution for the water scarcity in Rajapalayam town by including it in the Tamirabarani combined drinking water project.

In a memorandum, its president, P.R. Ramasubrahmaneya Rajha, said that two water storage facilities, using resources of Ayyanar Koil river, were formed one after another to cater to the drinking water requirements of the town. But, the second facility was bone dry with no water.

Relying on these two water facilities, the Rajapalayam Municipal Council did not show any interest to implement the Tamirabarani combined drinking water project for the town, the memorandum said.

Monsoon failure

With the monsoon failing, the water table in wells around the facilities have gone down. Water from these wells was used to be pumped, after purification, to the overhead tank and distributed to the town.

Even this was not possible these days and the town was supplying water through pipelines for only one hour that too once in 10 days.

The situation might go worse in the coming days, Mr. Rajha felt.

Stating that the combined drinking water was all set to meet the needs of adjacent towns like Sivakasi and Srivilliputtur, Mr. Rajha urged Mr. Stalin to include Rajapalayam in the Tamirabarani project.

City wages war against plastic

August 27th, 2009

Chennai, Aug. 26: City residents can look forward to brighter days with the local government authorities declaring war on plastic waste, a major environment problem that has been haunting Chennai.

“We are on the lookout for a simple and eco-friendly technology to either recycle or dispose of plastic garbage generated in the city,” said Mr Rajesh Lakhoni, corporation commissioner, Chennai.

Speaking to this newspaper on the sidelines of a national workshop on co-processing of hazardous waste in cement kilns organised by Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board here on Wednesday, Mr Lakhoni said the ban on plastic at Marina beach

has been found to be effective. “Marina is slowly em-erging as one of the beautiful sites in the country. But we cannot ban plastics elsewhere in the city since it is an essential ingredient in our daily life,” he said.

“We have to find effective steps to dispose or recycle 200 tonnes of plastic garbage generated daily in the city. We are looking for partners and technical know-how for disposing of plastic waste,” he said. Plastic constitutes almost 10 per cent of the 3,700 tonnes of waste generated in Chennai everyday.

Mr Ulhas Parlikar, director, ACC, said his company has successfully developed an eco-friendly technology for the safe disposal of plastic waste. “The company’s Kymore plant in Madhya Pradesh has a technology for processing various kinds of plastic waste. No abnormal variations were noticed during or after the processing of plastics,” Mr Parlikar told delegates.

Earlier, environment minister T.P.M. Mohideen Khan, who inaugurated the workshop, said 2,655 factories let out hazardous waste of about 3.14 lakh tonnes per year.

Traffic police urges MTC to revise running time of buses

Traffic police urges MTC to revise running time of buses

CHENNAI: Seeking cooperation from the Metropolitan Transport Corportation (MTC) to minimise accidents involving buses, traffic police officials in the city have urged the corporation to revise the running time of buses to ensure that drivers do not resort to overspeeding or rash driving to complete trips in time.

While 75 persons lost their lives in accidents involving MTC buses till July this year (145 died in 2008), many traffic police officials say it is high time that the MTC management checks to see whether the running time allotted to its services is adequate and revise it, if necessary.

"Several times, when we inquire with MTC drivers who cause accidents, they say they had to rush because as they could not complete trips in time due to various reasons: increasing vehicle population, traffic congestion, large number of signals, a number of passengers getting in and out at every bus stop. It is for the MTC to ensure that drivers are given sufficient time to complete the stipulated number of trips,'' says a senior traffic police official in north Chennai.

Additional commissioner of police (traffic) Md Shakeel Akhter says he will write to MTC, asking it to be practical in fixing the running time for buses. "We cannot tell MTC what to do. It is only our suggestion, to ensure that the running time of services on all routes is sufficient,'' Akhter told The Times of India.

Many MTC drivers say they drive an average distance of 120 km to 150 km per shift. "The running time for most of the services has not been revised for more than a decade. When more than 800 new vehicles are added to the city roads everyday, with road space remaining the same, more traffic signals are coming up. Reaching the destination in time is not an easy task for us,'' says a driver in Broadway.

MTC officials say they have been revising the running time wherever necessary and that drivers are exaggerating the issue. "What the drivers say is not true. They blame the management only to shield their faults. In fact, most of the services arrive at the depot 10 to 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time. About 3,000 of our 8,000 drivers have an accident-free record. We have introduced over 2,000 new buses in the past two years; it has reduced driving difficulty in many ways. Reducing running time in many cases will bring down the number of trips, which will in turn affect passengers,'' says an MTC official.
