Chennai, Aug. 24: “The second phase of the Marina beach beautification is nearing completion and 90 per cent of the civil work is over,” Chennai mayor M. Subramanian, who inspected the beach beautification work underway from Napier Bridge to Light House, said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters after hearing grievances and suggestions from the morning walkers and the public, the mayor said the footpath would have granite stones and pillars on the sideways to provide an aesthetic look. Steel hand-grabs would be installed at different points to help the senior citizens and 14 bench-like structures in colourful granite would be erected facing the beach. So far 12 such structures have been completed and the other two would be erected soon, he said.

A lush green area has been created along the footpath. About 50 toilet facilities are also coming up as part of the scheme, he said. The civic body would spend about Rs 20 crore on the second phase of the project and this includes Rs 3.50 crore for installing decorative lights and street lamps.

Earlier, Mr Subramanian who arrived at the beach by 6.15 am, was annoyed when he noticed broken slabs and tiles on the new footpaths constructed under the beautification project. He asked the engineers concerned to conduct regular inspections and replace the worn out slabs and tiles. Corporation commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni, chief engineer P. Murugesan and superintending engineer Chandrasekaran accompanied the mayor during the inspection.

Meanwhile, top brass of the city corporation conducted an all-party meeting to discuss the issue of surrendering several posts in the Chennai corporation as part of administrative reforms.

The mayor, who chaired the meeting held at the Ripon Buildings, announced that a committee comprising civic officials and union representatives would be formed to settle the issue amicably.

Consultants to chalk out clean-up blueprint

Chennai, Aug. 24: The 47-acre, sprawling Velachery lake is all set to become a tourist spot with the city corporation planning to introduce boating facilities and rejuvenate the polluted lake.

“Chennai corporation would soon appoint consultants to study the feasibility of beautifying Velachery and Chetpet lakes that are located within the city corporation limits,” said corporation commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni. The corporation council is expected to pass a resolution in this regard and appeal to the government seeking custody of these two lakes that are now maintained by the PWD and fisheries department, he said.

Besides Velachery lake, the corporation plans to introduce boating facilities at Chetpet lake and Mylady’s Park. As part of the project, new walkways, greenery and landscaping will be taken up. The first lake to be beautified under the project will be Mylady’s Park maintained by the city corporation. Desilting work has commenced and the work is scheduled for completion by January 2010, Mr Lakhoni added. When asked whether Tamil Nadu Tourism Board will participate in the development and introduce boating, he said the project was in the preliminary stage.

“Rejuvenating the lake has been a long-pending demand of the local public and the West Velachery Welfare Associations had petitioned the state government several times to revive the lake,” Mr Sambasivam, a senior citizen of Thillai Ganga Nagar, said. “If the lake is rejuvenated, the entire locality will benefit as it will improve the groundwater table. A few decades back, the water body was a haven for aquatic birds and fish and served as a major drinking water source for residents. The lake has lost several acres due to encroachment and unchecked land-grabbing,” he alleged.

Velachery lake to get a facelift

Chennai, Aug. 24: Hundreds of families living around Velachery lake can soon heave a sigh of relief as the lake, seen so far as an ugly water body with intolerable stench, is all set to get a new lease of life besides turning residential areas picturesque.

The Public Works Department (PWD) is likely to hand over the lake to the city corporation for beautification (first of its kind in Chennai region), confirmed a senior PWD official.

While the Chennai Metro Water Board once volunteered to beautify the lake but withdrew, red-tapism spoiled the chances of rejuvenating the lake in another instance, wherein experts of the state Water Resource Department suggested a project to re-energise the weak aquifers in Besant Nagar by carrying water from the lake through pipes to more than a dozen open dug wells and temple tanks in Tiruvanmiyur.

According to PWD sources, the proposal was mooted a few years ago but the project continued to remain on paper. But now the city corporation has agreed to rejuvenate the lake. A decade back, the lake served as a major source of drinking water for the residents of Velachery but now industrial waste and unchecked sewerage inflow that drain into the lake have polluted the eco-system of the water body.

Currently, the city corporation is drawing water from the lake to water the plants that are raised in Adyar, Taramani and neighbouring areas. Normally, the water quality improves during the monsoon but otherwise even planktons find it difficult to survive in the water, particularly in summer when the oxygen level depletes due to pollution, PWD sources added.
